Recently took Broadband connection of MTNL in Delhi. Have a Desktop and a Laptop, so opted for a wireless modem (Trendchip, Chinese) from MTNL so that both could have internet access. The problem is that the Laptop receives the wireless signal full strength and recognizes it as MTNL network, however no data transfer takes place. On pinging the modem “Request timed out” message comes up very frequently. Very few packets of data (10-30 only) are received. The same modem is working fine if physically connected to the desktop or PC via Ethernet cable and gives good internet experience. On contacting MTNL they said that there is problem with laptop. I don’t think that is the case as in other Wi-Fi spots like Hotels I am able to access the internet on my laptop. The laptop is Compaq Presario v3000. Please help.

What is wrong is with the level of knowledge/ignorance of those MTNL guys :D. Going by what you have mentioned, there's nothing wrong with your laptop. What OS are you running on the 1) Laptop2) Desktop (Is this always connected thru LAN wire to modem?)Check if the name to your network also called SSID, remember all wireless machines on your network should have the same SSID ie network name. You will have to check the SSID on the WiFi router & on your laptop. Also check on which protocol your laptop & WiFi are currently working on ie: 802.11a/b/g mode, if your laptop is working on 'g' then the Wifi should be on the same or on a mixed mode.(not familiar with these Chinese gizmos that MTNL has a penchant for.)Also if you have configured for security, you have the types/level/paswd same on both ends :)

I'm on the same setup as your's.. Using MTNL wifi on Laptop and desktop is connected Via ethernet.First of all open the network connections settings in your laptop..In TCP/IP properties you will find an entry for "IP address" . Don't use "obtain the Ip address automatically"..Give some value like 192.168.1.30 etc..default gateway is 192.168.1.1Desktop can be left with "obtain ip address automatically".I think you are using Vista in your compaq laptop..me too faced similar kind of problem initially in Vista on my Dell laptop.

Thanks Moto, Socrates, Essbee,:thumb:posted for the first time on this forum. Thanks for prompt replies. Coming to the problem at hand, I am not as tech savvy as you guys but i will try and do what you have suggested and report back by tomorrow.

OK guys The modem is Trendchip HG520.The wireless protocol is 811 B/G and B+G is setup on modem.I opened the MTNL website and tried to configure the modem as per that. frankly I didnt do much and tried tweaking the laptop network settings. The data transfer is now taking place but it is extremely slow, equivalent or slower than dial up and also unreliable- It doesnt take place all the time as the connection gets timed out. So basically I have moved forward a step but problem not resolved.Any more tips??

Since its a MTNL piece, I suggest that you go personally to your exchange & meet someone senior DGM level at least & explain that its not the laptop to be blamed as it works (WiFi) fine elsewhere. Infact I suggest you take your laptop with you, if they have WiFi in the exchange :P you can try it out on some other WiFi router. If they are peddling a bum piece then they should replace it.

You can also ask them to replace your model with a different model if nothing works. You can make some reasons...
