Update 8:10 p.m.
Ethernet and thus the Internet working in Kubuntu Linux:yahoo:. In fact I am posting this from inside Firefox running in Kubuntu.

How it worked:

I had to try some possibilities and at last it worked with this command (but in 10Mbps Full Duplex, may be 10Mbps Half Duplex also) but strictly 10Mbps:mad:.

sudo mii-tool -F 10baseT-FD eth0

(have to provide your root password)

As it appears from the command the Ethernet and Internet work with my modem but had to enforce 10Mbps/Full Duplex mode by mii-tool command in Linux too.

So, it appears that this modem works only in 10Mbps mode and not any higher:wall: with my Realtek NIC. It seems MTNL have provided me with an old technology implemented modem, i.e., old modem in new packaging:@.

Any suggestion for making it work in 100Mbps or any other higher speed mode?

Update 9:45 p.m.
It seems 100Mbps argument also works as far as LAN LED on the modem is concerned. Internet could not be accessed in this mode yet. Will try later.

@essbebe Thanks. Yes this kind of speed is about that of USB, in fact lesser. In USB mode it gives 12Mbps but I have to use 10Mbps for LAN.

And I tried to use your link to update drivers for Ethernet NIC. But somehow the link on the downoad page is not working (javascript:void(0) only). Anyway I downloaded the driver installer from this chinese site ????

When I uninstalled my old drivers and installed the new drivers (though they are for RTL8111D and I have RTL8111C) the Ethernet was activated for sometime and then my PC crashed. After rebooting into XP, Ethernet was disconnected when I logged into XP. It did not get activate at 100Mbps again and I am now using it at 10Mbps now. What do you observe from from all this?

hey shanky! me too having d same prob. I also hv this 882 from mtnl.my connection has started breaking frequently since last month.when did ur prob start ??plz share if ur prob. is solved.

@HHH it is Shashank80 dude! Anyway, I am having no Internet connection with Ethernet/LAN cable if I connect to the modem in Auto Negotiation or 100Mbps Full/Half Duplex mode.I am able to connect to connect with LAN cable only if I manually set the Speed & Duplex mode in the configuration of my NIC to 10Mbps Full/Half Duplex. Or I have to connect with USB cable. And you are correct, for a couple of days I am not having a very stable connection in this mode too.Sorry, I have found no way to just plug and connect to internet with this modem other than first setting it to 10Mbps mode. (BTW in Vista, it is ok) In Linux too I have to set it to connect at 10Mbps Speed, nothing more. Checked Windows drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled them, but no help. I have only 10Mbps mode. And essbebe has said this is not actually MT882. But why is it printed as such? I think it is a firmware glitch or specific to my hardware - NIC (but how does it work in Windows Vista and not in Windows XP or Linux?). It could help if I too got a solution.

Update July 18:Can surf in 100Mbps mode in Linux Kubuntu. But again had to use mii-tool with this command:sudo mii-tool -F 100baseT4 eth0Now it remains only a Windows XP problem, that too for my PC. But don't know why. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my NIC drivers. But cannot connect in 100Mbps mode in Windows XP, why?:madness: Could there be any driver conflicts? Any guesses? I need to work in full speed.:pleasehelp:
