always try to use mtnl dns servers when possible. like 59.179.243.70 or 203.94.243.70 or 203.94.227.70using opendns is a bad idea because it takes 10 times longer to work. if mtnl dns sitting next to you in your city takes 18-19 milli seconds then opendns takes 270-280 ms for the same website because your website name goes all the way to usa for getting translated into the websites IP address.so unless you are using some website which is not in the above 3 dns addresses of mtnl only and only then go for non mtnl dns addresses. and once ure work is over switch back to mtnl dns.test for dns speed simply ping mtnl dns server and opendns server you will see the figures i have given above.Note: you can also use DNS servers of other ISPs physically located in near your home if some website is not working. but dont go for international dns servers they will be much farther away physically so much slower. also if u want you can make your own dns server, buts for more advanced users who need to host a website on their computer... so stick with those dns servers which are located physically as close as possible to your area of residence.

and you save what? microseconds? wow. that is worth it to use crappy mtnl dns servers.opendns saves you from phishing sites. opendns also saves you from conficker. i say its totally worth it. the second you might save by not using opendns.

yes microseconds are worth saving esp if you are running a game server or hosting a chat site or something else.infact i will strongly recommend it even for home users.security from phishing is a browser issue and OS issue not a dns issue so keep it awayand conficker again is a security issue either use linux or use a good virus scanner for dns use mtnl

in addtion what admin said:ur whole website doesnt come thru opendns, just DNS request go thru opendns and that too only first time.

most operating systems have something called dns cache. that means you do not use a dns server everytime you visit the same site.

plus only a bad insurance salesman sells you a life insurance plan which has both life policy and some tax saving or some ulip attached for the benefit of the insurance company.a good insurance buyer buys only a plain and simple insurance policy... similarly a dns server which is offering you value added services is fine but nothing worth drooling over when it is located in usa...plus u have major privacy issues. everything you do gets recorded in USA how good is that?? not good at all... if i visit a website which is located in india like IIM or IAS website UPSC.GOV.IN which is located on delhi mtnl server then why should it go through USA??? i mean i dont want to overblow this privacy issue but use mtnl and go to upss.gov.in and only you and mtnl know where you have gone!!!really use airtel if you r not able to get access but why go so far??? sab phoren ka maal mast nahi hota bhai... apna maal bhi istemaal karo

how can you be sure that mtnl has secure dns servers? can you real trust mtnl to have secure dns servers at their end? we are living in times when DoT India website remain hacked for days... do you really think that using DNS servers of a government owned company gives me any form of privacy or security?

what a useless argument. why should i care? can you guarantee opendns is secure have you gone in their server room to check? everythign is hackable baby

----------

plus what about my request to visit upsc website? it will go to pakistan the dubai then africa then uk the cross to usa then some state then somewhere else... duddee ure request will get recorded in each and every server... from here to opendns in usa and from usa back to india which could mean 20-30 countries!!! hahahaha no thanks baby give me MTNL anyday
