Problem in BSNL 8Mbps connection

The older DSLAMs are clocked to run at 2048kbps ONLY. The newer NIB 2 machinery is clocked to run at 8190kbps (but the speed is limited to 2048kbps or 8190kbps according to the plan opted by the subscriber). So unless they install the newer NIB 2 machinery on your exchange, u wont get the 8mbps speeds.

Usually exchanges now have both the NIB1 and NIB2 machinery. The older subscribers are on NIB1 and the newer connections are given through the NIB2 machinery. Someday they plan to shift the old subscribers too to the newer machinery.

I checked in my area some people have IP address starting 117.XXX assuming they are having NIB2 DSLAM and I can get that speed if they want.

Try to learn the exchange under which they are connected. I mean try to find out the exchange details of these newer 177.xx.xx.xx subscribers. If they come under your exchange, then u know someone is lying. Ask them (BSNL Personnel) to shift u to the new high speed DSLAM, and enjoy the speeds for which u pay.

i don't know much about DSLAM but i searched about what you said about 128 port DSLAM & i found out that no. of ports does not have anything to do with speed but the technology of DSLAM.i have found 8 ports DSLAM supporting up to 24mbps speeds so if your exchange has newer DSLAM's no. of ports doesn't matter in my opinion.

check that the IP you are getting is something like 117.x.x.x & most probably your exchange should have the necessary machinery installed for 8mbps.as for those who say that on their 256kbps plans their line speed is 8mbps it's not something new.modem will show you the line rate at which modem syncs with DSLAM at local exchange but your speed will depend on the speed cap put on your account/line by BSNL's servers.so if your line speed is 8 mbps but bsnl has put a speed cap of 256kbps on your account you will get only 256kbps speeds.

I contacted personally again BSNL offical yesterday and also discuss technical issues with them.

As per they comment

- They do have DSLAM on NIB2 in my exchange which may support 8Mbps speed.

- I am subscriber of broadband since last 4 years and I am connected with Pune server for which DSLAM they have is supporting speed upto 2Mbps on NIB1.

- To transfer my connection to NIB2 technical team need order from commercial offices and still I will have break time of up to 4 days because 2 connection cannot run simultaneously or transfer immediately as my older connection is Pune based whereas newer will be Banglore based.

I hope they will have some solution in next few days as I have permitted them if I get break in connection.

Finally I have got 8Mbps DSLAM shifting and can see path of 8MB on my ADSL modem which has been assigned from my exchange DSLAM.Regarding speed, checking it onto dataone speed tester I am seeing around 3.4 Mbps.Still I have one question. I have been shifted to bsnl domain from dataone and my user id get changed. But still I am on same gateway, I mean IP address range of 59.xxx and not to IP address 117.xxx.May older gateway affecting my speed?I hope somebody will have answer for this.Thanks in advance....

that's unusual but anyway if you can reach around 7mbps in night then i think it's OK.if you never get more than 4mbps then you need to discuss this with local exchange because to get 8mbps speeds your line must be in a good condition & also in most cases IP should be 117.x.x.x because NIB II network is faster than NIB I especially for home users in general.also check speed by downloading some trial software from softpedia(preferably more than 100MB try XP SP3)or the same SP3 from microsoft site using some download manager like flashget.if you get ~800KBps then it's OK.
