Probably your setup in your area isn't the best. I mostly don't face major issues but I've only been a user since December.

@vishalrao bro, I am not facing any issues with either Airtel or TPF...something is screwed up at the local level in cases such as yours. I can confirm both my connections are rock stable. Also, speeds are assured, not guaranteed, only to the local nodes of speedtest servers, not any server worldwide. And yes, speeds will vary over time due to n number of reasons.

Tell you what, complain to TPF and tell them since you are paying them a rip off amt (Rs 47xx incl. tax/month for the monthly plan) for the privilege of a 1 Gig connection, they need to sort this out or you will downgrade to 500. :) I did that since they couldn't fix my issues I went from 1G to 300. And please, please don't pay up for 1 year up front (never more than 3 or max 6 mths) because you'll get stuck if your honeymoon with 1G is over sooner than the plan expires. They dont refund the money. I always did a test drive for a month with 1G and both Airtel and TPF were disappointing.

@Chip what's your public IP address? Is it static and or ipv6?

And can you do a traceroute to maybe fr.archive.ubuntu.com ?

My IP4 (cgnatted) changed from 103.xxx to 58.xxx yesterday and concides with traceroute going thru airtel while this speed issue...

BTW I am very happy with my 1gbit plan on TPF most of the time :-)

I am on a 100.xx.xx.xx series CGNAT. Sorry, cannot give my my public v4 and v6 address(es) on a public forum.

Anyways, here's the tracert done via the router on IPv4:

1 100.72.160.1 2.715 ms 1.460 ms 2.608 ms
2 172.18.23.254 1.951 ms 2.003 ms 2.378 ms
3 125.18.121.125 2.504 ms 2.036 ms 2.369 ms
4 116.119.112.230 111.388 ms
182.79.134.112 106.698 ms
116.119.121.16 126.041 ms
5 * * *
6 51.158.8.168 122.493 ms
51.158.8.27 127.469 ms
51.158.8.168 130.296 ms
7 51.158.143.11 134.771 ms 126.172 ms
51.158.143.9 125.812 ms
8 51.158.154.169 135.898 ms 135.918 ms 134.003 ms

Airtel has downtime now (hence used only TPF for the trace route)...got a SMS from them. ETA for a fix is about 4:30 pm. Wonder if some major maintenance going on?

@Chip if you can, would you try the following on your TPF connection and let me know what you observe?

Do a

Code:
wget http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/f/firefox/firefox-dbg_66.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1_amd64.deb

and let me know the speed? (its a 595 MB file)

Do a speedtest.net check on London based "Swish Fiber" server and let me know what speed you see?

You are in Pune's KP area? The TPF field tech person just told me KP and BT Kawade road areas are facing speed issues and my issue might get resolved along with this area so I'm hoping that's true...

I get about 33-35 MB/s at peak using IDM..dont have the wget command on pfSense. How much do you get using the wget command?

Yes, I am near KP though not exactly in that area. Haven't noticed a slow down per se.

@Chip what about speedtest.net on London Swish Fiber server?

If you dont mind can you re-test on IDM by temporarily configuring it to use only single connection and not multi connection download?

Just for reference/comparison I was getting around 30 MBps download from fr.archive.ubuntu.com using single connection (wget etc) and my speedtest.net to London server of Swish Fiber I was getting around 500-600 mbps on my 1gbit plan. Currently getting only 3 MBps and under 100 mbps respectively.
