i think i am lucky here to find 5 broadband connections in my apartment and out of five connections 3 are from tataindicom broadband

coming to the topic.. i think bsnl wont give an upgrade to the ul plans till they make their limited plans upto 8mbps.. this could take upto a year i guess.. then.. realistically.. we can probably see 2mbps ul for 900bucks..

@netfreak - you really think it will happen in a year? I really doubt :)@asterix - if 512kpbs is to be the base speed - the problem is who will lobby to make it happen? I actually wonder if there is ANY pressure group that will lobby for high speed net - does NASCOMM do it, for instance? Unfortunately current broadband users are a minority and at the top of the pyramid - right now, the govt concerns are at a more basic level, like actually getting computers, internet and computing knowledge to kids in villages.

What is needed that international forces put pressure on the telecom industry to improve. By international forces, I mean the Commonwealth Games or general Tourism. To meet the standards which the foreigners are addicted to, the Telecom industry will have to improve. The whole 2 Mbps thingy was due to the Commonwealth Games.

"if 512kpbs is to be the base speed - the problem is who will lobby to make it happen?"Good question. Perhaps media companies who might be interested in promoting online video content. Perhaps companies like Google; affordable 512UL will means a lot more Indians watching YouTube.

I'd be quite happy with 512kbs unlimited at under a grand. Problem then is the westerners wil start demanding higher quality streams to make use of thier several Mbs and we will be in the same situation again :(2Mbs unlimited i feel is still a few yrs off. Its eight times whats currently offered for the same price...hmm 4 yrs away at least.

Well well... all our troubles might get over soon. TRAI has announced that companies can lay their own Undersea Submarine cables to the Landing stations rather than buying it from International companies. This would drive more revenue to the ILD Operators and also give bandwidth to ISP's. This is what I read in the Hindu today... (I might be wrong..) Well if TRAI has opened up Landing stations to ILDO's and Service providers like Airtel could lay their own cables and get a nice catch of International Bandwidth. Can someone brief me about this Landing station thingi?? I'm a lamer...
