The two online retailers have amassed vast inventories in companies in which they have business interests and had sought a four- to six-month extension to help offload those products. The decision to go forward with the new rules on schedule was announced Thursday evening in a statement from India’s Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion.
Now, the products will have to be taken off the e-commerce platforms overnight.
“While we remain committed to complying with all laws and regulations, we will continue to look to engage with the government to seek clarifications that help us decide out future course of action as well as minimize the impact on our customers and sellers,” Amazon said in a statement Thursday evening.
Flipkart didn’t respond to calls seeking comment. It had earlier warned in a letter of “significant customer disruption” and is also said to have told the government that such a move would stunt the growth of e-commerce in India.
With the Indian government sticking to its February 1 deadline, Amazon has also started removing a range of products including Echo speakers, Fire TV streaming sticks and its private label products ranging from batteries, electronic accessories, travel accessories, and apparel among others from its India marketplace on Thursday evening.
These products were primarily sold by entities like Cloudtail and Appario Retail, which have an equity participation from the US e-commerce major and are no longer allowed to sell on the platform, as per the new guidelines.
The retail giant's hyperlocal offering Prime Now is also no longer offering groceries and electronic products from the company-fulfilled NOW store at the time of writing this article, while products from its supermarket chain partners like Big Bazaar, Star Bazaar, and More continues to be available for purchase.
By Thursday, numerous items sold by vendors such as Cloudtail, in which Amazon holds an indirect equity stake, were no longer available on the Amazon India site.
Clothing from Indian department store chain Shopper's Stop was also no longer available, as Amazon owns 5 percent of the company.
Amazon's own range of Echo speakers, its Presto-branded home cleaning goods and other Amazon Basics products such as chargers and batteries had also vanished from the website.
Industry sources have said the new rules will force the big e-sellers to change their business structures, and will raise compliance costs.
Amazon India told Reuters it was "committed to remaining compliant to all the laws of the land", adding that all sellers make their own independent decisions of what to list and when.
Exclusive deals with sellers will be discontinued, the two sources said.
