can any one tell me difference between ota update vs kies firmware update??i think on ota its very small in size?? like 4.1.2 on note 2 is only 260 mbbut i am right now downloading on kies and its gonna cross 1gb easily ...................what are pros and cons of both kindly tell me fast.will my all apps and user setting will erase in both ???it will infact cross 1.5 gb easily:Shoot: on kies

@Toocool OTA update is a smaller file as it onky installs the patches or updates parts of the OS that have changed. The download via Kies is downloading the entire OS file. If I go by my experience with my iPhone then updating either way should not delete any of your data. Unless you are doing a software restore. I cant really comment on Samsung's Android update via Kies as I haven't done it on any other device before. Maybe someone with experience can chime in..The OTA update I did today did not delete any of my data. It just rebooted the device, downloded the file and updated the firmware.

hmm..what about people who have done rooting and all ? they need to do that again ?hmm..what about people who have done rooting and all ? they need to do that again ?

yeah. The kies update is the whole rom image. So it takes a very long time. If your connection breaks during the process, you have to redo the whole thing again. While the OTA as rightly mentioned only contains the update files.
As a rule I will always do a factory reset after an update after backing up my data. Makes the system more responsive and faster.
While updating, your data will remain safe most of the times but you never know when you have a bad day.

You need to unroot in order to get the official updates. Flash a stock ROM using odin in order to do that.
