Suriya - Prince of Chennai Box Office
Suriya’s, KV Anand directed Ayan is completing 100 days run today in four Chennai screens.
It is not only the biggest hit in the career of Suriya but also 2009’s first blockbuster, that will do business worth Rs 45 to 50 crore worldwide from theatricals and other rights.
It is an open secret that Suriya is the clear number one star in Kollywood and commands a huge opening especially in up market territories, the 3 C’s- Chennai City, Chengalpet (Chennai suburbs) and Coimbatore.
As per our sources in the trade Ayan has taken a share of Rs 4.05 Crore from Chennai , the third highest share for a Tamil film in the city.
At number one position and the record holder is Superstar Rajinikanth’s Sivaji- The Boss, with Rs 6.85 crore share, and in the second position is ‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Hassan’s Dasavatharam with Rs 5. 60 crore!
If Rajini is “the Emperor” and Kamal “the King”, then we can call Suriya “the Prince” of Chennai Box Office!

The wedding reception for the newlyweds, Meena and Vidyasagar, was held at the Mayor Ramanathan Hall in Chennai today (July 14th). The actress wed software engineer Vidyasagar on Sunday (July12th) at Tirupathi. While some of her close friends from the film industry made it to the wedding, many could not attend.
But the reception was a grand affair, with many of the film personalities, including Kamal Haasan, Venkatesh, Jivva, Radhika sarath Prabhu, Jayam Ravi & spouse, Rajathi Ammal and Kushboo present at the venue to wish the couple. The couple looked lovely with Meena dressed in a light-pink ghagra choli and the groom in a sherwani.

The unit was stationed there for some time to shoot AR Rahman’s two song sequences. The final decision is to release Kanthaswamy on August 15th. Though there were widespread reports that Kanthaswamy would hit the marquee on August 7th, the film unit decided to delay the release for a week to coincide with the Independence Day.

The Half Yearly Report
Into the second week of July, it is time for us to present the half yearly report of 2009 for Kollywood. The first question is obviously whether the second quarter has been better than the first. Around 3 months ago we had presented the quarterly report of Kollywood. That time, it had been a pretty bleak state of affairs. Few hits, very few big releases being announced and the IPL eating heavy time into film revenues; all this had taken a toll on Kollywood. Looking back at the situation of the first quarter, one is tempted to say that the second quarter has been better, only marginally though.
