Tamilnadu Arasu Fiber Internet / BSNL - Ubiquiti GPON device

Which device is it?

It supports the same protocols/wavelength used my most indian isps but ubiquiti has configured their ONTs to only be configurable from UI OLTs using ONT Profiles and afaik, no one is using UI OLTs here(maybe because they are so expensive). There is some work done on removing this restriction but it doesn't support all 3 of their GPON ONT products.

@Figment9543 I have not tried this personally but ufiber nanog and ufiber loco should work. I am waiting for ufiber instant to be properly supported before I try this.
see these repositories, GitHub - stich86/UF-Instant-Mod: Swap Unifi custom firmware with modified firmware to use GPON-ONU on 3rd party OLT

This'll not work out of the box unless your LCO also uses UI OLT. After installing custom fw on them, you'll get ssh shell and probably a web gui where you can configure every thing.

@ishanjain28 thank you!!

This is for my parents place. I will stick with TP-Link or something though.
I don't live in India, so I can't visit frequently to tinker something if it smokes. Just looking for something plug and play and reliable.

Any idea what is the best ONU / ONT for BSNL/Bharatnet? I prefer to have my own router - so preferably just the ONU/T. I'm planning to take static IP as well.

Thanks again!

Genexis earth 1000R (if you don't need VOIP services), genexis earth E4222(if you need VOIP and this also has 4 ethernet ports if you are looking for a single box to do every thing). Firmware on these is decent, I have had months of uptime with 0 issues.

This(1-Port Gigabit GPON Terminal) is recommend on r/bsnl but I don't have any personal experience with it. I personally wouldn't use Syrotech or Uniway.

I would say, first confirm if Arasu / BSNL Fiber is using GPON or EPON. If it is GPON maybe you can try one of the 3rd party ONT/ONU. But if it is EPON, none of the major stores sell EPON ONT/ONU. In that case, you may have to use the provided ONT/ONU.

You also may not get connectivity if ONT/ONU and OLT (may be from same or different vendors) are not compatible.
