MUMBAI: Tata Sky, the joint venture between the Tata group and Star offering Direct To Home (DTH) service expects major shift from cable television to DTH service.
The company which launched DTH service in August last year managed to attract 10 lakh subscribers in the first year of operations making it the fastest first million reached by any DTH platform in the world, according to top company officials.
Speaking to reporters, Vikram Mehra, chief marketing officer of the company said the subscriber growth is expected to go up sharply and cross the 80-lakh mark over the next five years.
Mehra said, DTH technology can go to the remote places, as well and military bases, in places like Kashmir, which had no access to television earlier.
He said Tata Sky offers different packages from Rs 200 per month to Rs 300 per month which includes some interactive packages also. In many areas in a city like Mumbai, the DTH service works out cheaper than the cable service, he said.
The company which started about a year ago by offering 55 channels currently offers 140 pay channels and some interactive applications.
Tata Sky, today, announced applications like active learning, story telling for kids, quizzing and even live images from religious places like Shirdi.
Plans to launch personal viewer recorder (PVR) services under which live TV pictures can be paused is also in the pipeline. Its pricing is, however, yet to be decided, he said.
