Yo may be right, But I am quite confident that
1)TATA)sky+ is not HD capable
2)and even if TATA)sky+ is = HD capable, Tata would sell a new Box

1: What santanusinha says holds true though. Both the New Tata Sky+ and the new TataSky boxes technically can play HD. They are both MPEG4 DVB-S2 boxes, so they can recieve HD broadcasts. As for outputting it, Component out does 1080i.

2: You are right about that though, knowing TS they'll launch a new box nonetheless

Well, your answer is not correct technically..

The Tata Sky+ box has component (Y/Cb/Cr) video output and coax/optical fiber audio out. The video is capable of 1080i video. The audio output is perfectly capable of delivering 5.1 channel Dolby Digital signal(minimum required for HD standard) and even DTS truHD for that matter. Current HD providers provide 1080i picture and 5.1 DD sound. The technology used for HD transmission is MPEG 4, as is currently the case with tatasky+. So the box is certainly capable of both receiving and delivering HD content to users. Whether they would do it or not is a business decision.

I called up tatasky yesterday with this same question. And to be honest they said that they would sell a new box for HD, but the answers were vague at the best. (btw, the technical person to whom my call was tranferred concurred regarding the technical feasiblity). Regarding the date of launch, i mentioned the upcoming football world cup, and it seemed that they are going to launch the HD channels much before diwali. But again, as i mentioned, the answers were a little vague, so i could be wrong on the dates.

component cable can actually do 1080p

component can do 1080p too

also component is analogue and they going for DIGITAL might want to do HD in DIGITAL HDMI

Regarding #1, take a look around the required tech specs for HD receivers, and you will see what i was trying to talk about. Not only HD, the Tata Sky+ box is, in fact, capable of far more than that, including net surfing and/or iptv. At least, the hardware is there. It even has USB. All you need is some software that they can update to our STBs any time and lo.. it has become a perfectly capable all in one media center.

However, I agree with you on #2 completely. I do not think tata will ever provide such an update without charging a hefty amount for the functionality. Currently, the situation with tatasky plus is this:

1) You pay to buy the device
2) You pay to use services that require no intervention from tatasky+ (recording of media)

They wouldn't hesitate to milk the HD cash cow now and in the future. In the process, us customers, have to pay for the same device multiple times:
1) pay for tataksky+
2) pay for HD receiver now this box will be like TS+ with some bling removed and (probably) HDMI added
3) pay for HD DVR later which will be a re-branded version of TS+ with HDMI or will be TS+ with some useless gimmicky features added.

Sorry for the long reply.

Tata Sky + has the Broadcom BCM7453TKPB10G chip....Unfortunately this chip is not detailed on Broadcom site itself....if we take that this chip should be a follower of BCM 7452 chip then the details of the BCM 7452 chips put this DVR as a HD Capable set but if we see the BCM 7454 specs its just a SD stb(which is not a DVR but MPEG 4 capable STB ...used in airtel boxes)....In all certainties we will get to know only when TS launches HD service and what it does for the people who converted TS+...Maybe the TS marketing people on this forum can throw some light here :)

Whether component can do 1080p is irrelevant, so that was never the point of my post. HDTV using STB in 1080p is far away (read >5/10 years) in india. All HD channels will be transmitted in 1080i.

For information, component video can do HD. But there are some restrictions:

1) It needs special hardware on the connected devices as this implementation is part of a newer proposal to the SEC. Most of these should be available on newer model HDTV's.
2) Blu-ray and HD-DVD players may not transmit 1080p to component by design, to minimize piracy (or that is what they think). HDMI supports authentication using HDCP keys and are therefore considered to be more secure than component.

We, as users, have nothing to gain technically from buying a new box for HD from tatsky. Not from, the audio side, neither from the video side.

but DTH services can do this

plus you can play BLURAY 1080P over component not normally but with HDCP hacking which is very easy
