It's quite simple. One world moves forward, another world moves backward. But it's the same world. Imagine like you are rewinding a video to a certain time and then playing it again. Or, like the Rewind feature in certain video games like Price of Persia, Dirt, etc.

Plus towards the end I felt similarities like in Doctor Who and Hitman a little bit. Doctor Who meets River Song like this where one moves forward in time and the other moves backward just like the Protagonist and Neil. And towards the end the Protagonist saves Kat like in Hitman.

Never finished Primer, felt boring. Available on Prime, guess will watch again to see if it changes my mind.

Temporal Sci-Fi has been one of my favourite genre over the years. The movie was just weak with respect to characters from what I remember watching it years back.

Yes, but having said that - I dont think Primer alone has done something like this in terms of the end result of time travel - Also "inversion" is something new - unless there is some other movie that part has is taken from. Overall, Tenet was more watchable for sure.

Definitely. There is always a gap, sort of, in time travel fiction. Like how does the characters figure out which place or point in time do they want to land exactly and not fall into an alternate timeline by mistake. In Tenet, it's simply rewind to the point and play again but without the turnstiles (checkpoints) to exit back, it will be a hell for whoever enters the inverse world. The machines need to exist for inversion, imagine you went past the creation of the machines. No exit.
