^ That has been one of the prime reasons why Chennai has a shortage of top end multiplexes. Barring Sathyam, there is not a single one which can match up to some of the best in the country. Sathyam is in a different league altogether, and from my experience, probably the most VFM multiplex in all of India.

PVR its there in chennai...
Most Chennaites will skip a movie than watch it for more than say 150-200 (except for die hard fans of their particular local hero, for whom they would pay even more) ... Plus single screen theatres are also there, which can continue to price their tickets at 70,80 or even 100 etc for balcony seats which people will happily patronize.Inox, Mayajaal also price in the 150 range ... Not sure how they are..Plus Sathyam itself has opened Escape Cinemas & S2 Cinemas in different parts of the city.

If there is no restriction in Ticket pricing in chennai then prices will bound to shoot....With this pricing many are coming to theatres...I dont want to see ticket pricing for Rs.250 / Picket...I have watched movies in PVR - Bangalore by paying Rs. 250; the same comfort is given in PVR chennai for Rs. 120...
AGP is also there in a mall, not sure how that is as well.
As such Chennai folks are now only (last 2-3 years) opening up to the idea of paying more for "comfort" than just the movie.
In fact, it is 120. Govt had actually made Rs.50 as maximum (Article from 2007)

he latest revision in the rates for admission tickets to cinema halls in the State, which took effect on Monday, reflects a balancing act by the Government in upholding consumer concerns as well as the interests of the film industry which turns in a whopping Rs. 100 crore till a year ago.
If the Government Order stipulating a cap on rates with Rs.10 as minimum and Rs.50 per ticket as the maximum for theatres was a windfall for film buffs, the subsequent revision allowing theatres to charge a maximum of Rs. 85 to Rs. 120 per ticket depending on their having a stipulated set of facilities has provided some relief to proprietors of multi-screen cinema halls and multiplexes.
Ofcourse, parking fees , 3d glasses & food are some of the ways, theatre owners try to make up their more ambitious profit targets.

If this restriction is lifted then the theatre owners will raise the price like any thing...they will be looting the public...I am happy watching cinemas in Satyam, PVR, AGS,Sangam, Fame...

PVR in Chennai sucks. Cramped seats, poor audio quality and what not. Not surprising since recovery is tough at those rates. PVR operates some excellent multiplexes in the NCR region, of course they don't come cheap.
