I hope this article in the hindu will be a wake up call for all ISP's in India..

It tells us how broadband growth has stagnated in india for the past few years..

The Hindu : Front Page : Usage-based model hampers broadband growth: experts

According to me i think so its because of the change in IT and tecom minister..

Before4 years it was Mr.Dayanidhi Maran ... he was just awesome ... he introduced bsnl broadand , one india plan and life time prepaid etc .. and once bsnl introduces these things, all others follow ....

But the currently the minister has changed and new major plans or developments haven't been heard ever since.

Currently changed ?

No, Maran quit in 2006, Raja has been in charge ever since.

If you ask me its TN politics holding the country to ransom here. Centre should have given the telecoms portfolio to another.

The only silver lining this time around is there are no commies to oppose tech. Lets see how much that changes things.

The other issue is that service providers were not ‘peering’ (inter-connecting), to the desired extent, with other networks internally, reaching out to content owners or optimising network operations within the country. This meant traffic is routed over international cables back to the country.

How ironic, this is what a local exchange or NIXI is supposed to solve but as we learned from the Hayai thread, they offer no solution at all. Waste of space chewing up resources.

thats the best article i have read in a national daily..raises all relevant points..:urock:
[*]only speed doesn't constitute Broadband the other crucial factor is usage limit
[*]peering
[*]regulatory policy
[*]Un-bundling -->> most crucial point - imagine if all of BSNL's lines are available to Tata, Airtel etc..wud also help smaller ISP's increase coverage and reliability..net result increased competition and reduced prices
[/list]

Broadband is still unfordable for the majority of indians. People here like to compare things like broadband with cable tv. The only way an optimum broadband penetration is possible among the our classes is if they sell a 2mbps unlimited connection for Rs. 100-150/month.

Sure, but these points have been made for years now to little avail from the concerned govt. officers..The only conclusion one is left with is they are in bed with the key players.
