Times of India fails at reviewing DTH Service Providers

Times of India is known for paid advertising more than ethics. This is nothing but a PR exercise by Sunil Mittal for his baby. Also, the comments in the TOI article are worth reading to get a different perspective. Tatas are way better than Times Group who are only known for biased journalism and paid articles aka advertising (Remember Bombay Times?)One of the biggest jokes in the article:The biggest launch of last year , MOVIES NOW , which showcases the biggest Hollywood blockbusters in HD, is not carried by Tata Sky, but is carried by all the other operators. How does Movies Now even compare itself to Star Movies or HBO? Movies Now only shows recycled stuff and this is a clear PR line by Times Group. They do not even have the financial muscle to buy big titles like an HBO, Star, Sony Pix or even WB!!!
 
they even dont know dat 1080p format channel is not available anywhere in this world and its 1080i or 720p which is available....in hd .!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
now that damage is done.... people or buyers who dont understand the technology will obviously go for airtel or videocon after reading the misguiding article.
 


this is the most idiotic review i have seen in an long time. The article writer is a gadha from my view.
Why ?
1. Dvb s2 giver more interactive services. Wtf...does he even know what dvb s2 is...
2. They published TS has the highest rain fade without conducting a sample survey,their own testing.
3. Universal remote is provided by dish and reliance? Frm when yaar...at least do some research then write.
4. And at last i didnt expect this from times, a biased article? They clearly promoted their own faltu movies channel.
Hence the reason for forums such as this & others to exist :)

TOI are too compromised to offer an objective take on this subject. And as you said they were using the opporitunity to push their own offerings, so thats bias to the hilt there. You just read an informercial.

Agree with everything but your last point. Times is a tabloid. They deserve no iota of respect. They create confusion and don't bother clarifying, let alone apologising later. They rely on sensationalism. Their papers only contain negativity
Hehe, i've been arguing for years that TOI is NOT a tabloid. You ppl don't even know what the heck a tabloid is. Its not just junk news, tabloids tend to be very hard hitting in getting stuff others won't touch. Who is doing that in India, nobody.

Have you been paying attention to whats been happening with Murdoch and his tabloids in the UK of late. Those are REAL tabloids, we don't have anything approaching a tabloid in this country. Where are the hard hitting articles that get ministers sacked, or power ppl of influence in trouble. nowhere.

We wont get a real tabloid so long as we have this 26% limit of FDI into news & current affairs.

Yes, i'm saying only a foreigner can give us a real tabloid. Because no Indian to date has succeeded in giving us one.

Direct-to-home (DTH) television is growing throughout India, with its easy setup, interactive services, and competitive offerings. But with its growth there has been an explosion in marketing messages and noise, making it harder to figure out the best services available. Rain: With monsoons in summer, it's important to choose a DTH operator that can withstand the rains while keeping signal. Tata Sky reports maximum loss of signal, even with light showers, while the others tend to perform in the heaviest of showers.

HD and 3D: Almost every provider offers some level of high-definition services. Reliance Digital TV HD leads the race, offering 250 HD-like channels, though Videocon offers the most ‘real HD’ channels (12 channels). Reliance's box has the ability to upgrade content to 1080p (a higher resolution), higher than competitors’ 1080i functionality. Reliance, Airtel, and Videocon are the only ones with 3D ready option.

Portability in Automobiles:
While all are oriented around the television, Dish TV and Airtel are the only ones who also give you the comfort of TV portability in automobiles.

Number of Channels: It’s probably the most important factor for any user: What channels are offered? In the digital world, the offerings have increased, with offerings covering entertainment, news, infotainment, SaasBahu sagas, spectacular sporting events, and classic Hindi and English movies. DTH Pioneer Dish TV offers more than 280+ plus channels, the recent operators Reliance, Airtel & Videocon offer more than 225+ channels while Tata Sky and Sun lag behind with just over 189+ and 178+ channels.

While Hindi General Entertainment Channels (GECs) and Hindi movie channels have traditionally dominated what people watch, the growing trend is the interest in depth in the different categories, and access to niche content. Reliance Digital TV leads in number of Hindi and English news channels, while almost all channels carry all the popular sports channels. Videocon also carries the most number of real HD channels (12).

In the last year, a rush of new channels have launched, and showing them has been a key differentiator for services to stand out. In the end, your choice should be based on what you care about. If you want the most technically advanced service (along with speedy customer care), go with Airtel. Dish TV is the most experienced player with a lot of content variety and has always been the steadiest contender. Sun TV is dominant in the south, but has yet to leave its mark in the rest of the country. Reliance and Videocon have come a long way and offer a huge number of channels and services.

And for your bang-to-buck needs, Videocon has the best entry level packages. The game is far from over, with new channels and new technologies entering the market every day. Tata Sky needs to offer its viewers more variety by picking up new channels. Meanwhile, newer entrants are gaining share from the traditional players with compelling technology and more channel selection.

So true for both TOI and Airtel. We should register our protest by boycotting them. I have boycotted TOI, I don't get that (not that others are good). I am in no position to boycott Airtel yet.
