Tour of Duty (Agnipath recruitment scheme)

I thought it was a good move in general but like the post of CDS the government has this thing of straight away implementing a good idea without having the patience to working it out first.
Armed forces shouldn't be centres that run employment guarantee programmes(quite agree with manish tewaris view)
Tommorow they can even start insisting on quotas and reservations for all you know.
Todays warfare doesnt need so many people. Need to have a right balance between manpower cost and firepower cost. Idea should be of having smaller and younger armies with the right mix of youth and experience. I think a major chunk of our defence budget goes into pensions and salaries and maintenence expenditures
 
Majority of people leave armed forces at the earliest time allowed and enjoy pension for the rest of life, including good private job on the basis of ex-servicemen tag. That is absolute misuse of their temperory association with armed forces. This system is good if not improvised to include reservations.

1- iirc , for pension minimum service of 20 years is required.

2- And pension and other benefits stayed in defence to retain the talent/qualified personnel in Armed forces.

3- I think nobody would like defence personnel to get engaged in corrupt practices ( although it exists in some form everywhere) as most of the police personnel ( not everyone).
Why would a qualified person join defence where he needs to get posted in different states/terrains( every 3-4 years) away from family whereas most of the other police forces generally stays in the same state for whole service period?

4- If we can't justify pension and other benefits for defence , how can MPs justify politicians pension (that to multiple pensions) who serves just 5 years tenure?

5- No matter how much you love your motherland, that passion fades when you see your family struggling for basic facilities whereas other sector enjoying much better benefits. In case of some mishap , defence personnel is sure that his family would be taken care of.

6- Everybody saw how ill paid and corrupt ridden was Afghanistan defence forces and why they surrendered. Irregular salaries along with ration deficit would ultimately result in same situation.

7 - Now regarding the 4 year tenure in "Agnipath" , why would a decent minded , decently qualified candidate would join forces where he know that he would have to struggle again to find a job after 4 years? And in that 4 years he has to perform tasks much stressful than comparative other govt jobs like clerks etc with just 30k/month pay.
 
What I don't understand is how they came up with the 4 year rule. Won't it take more than half of that time to properly train the person and have him gain some experience?
 
Like in europe and other countries they have to mandatorily serve the forces during their graduation.
Skills learnt during this tenure is both both contributing to the forces as well as the society.
Also that age group 17-21-23 most of them would be unmarried so that family pressure(no way against family or marriage) wouldnt be there and would be more focussed.
The 25% that make it further would provide more homogeneity of the forces rather than particular regiments based on region /ethnicity etc first bought about by the British.
In noway suggesting that the suggested system is not flawed but think its a step in the right direction to bring about reforms. Wish they had tested in a smaller group first before directly announcing it without weighing in its pros and cons
 
In most European Countries , Israel etc where mandatory service is there , population is less than even 1 state of India. We can't compare our country's dynamics and security with those of European countries.
Those countries mandated that because citizen's weren't inclined towards careers in Defence forces. In India you have 1000 candidates atleast for 1 soldier post.
Indian Govt has thousands of vacancies in every sector but they are not filled due to pack of volunteers or skilled candidates , but merely due to bureaucracy and political reasons.
 
Agreed 👍 but the objective should be whats best suited for the country in terms of giving it armed forces the egde. Certainly modernization , growing technological sophistication should be given priority and that involves cost. Wonder what are the recruitment policies in china and pakistan
