I have been a very long term user of both Airtel and TPF on/off. Both ISPs are pretty good here in Pune(Baner-Balewadi-Aundh Area) but I will compare them side by side in case someone is confused between the two. Note that this review is totally based on my personal experience and YMMV.
Airtel:
1. Better loaded latency which can be crucial in some niche use cases.
2. Customer Care is utter crap and has gone down the drain over the years. If the internet goes down, there is a good chance that it won't be back for 6-12 hours depending upon the outage duration. Their support team is ass and airtel has cut down on the number of service engineers. Just one poor guy in my area has to attend all the SRs.
3. Cheaper when compared to TPF for monthly plans. They also offer a 100 rupee discount every month if we opt for Airtel Black/One Airtel. Also the first time upfront cost is just 1500 now which is fully adjusted in the first few bills.
4. Better routing and no website blocking observed. Everything just loads super quickly without any fuss. Even a 100 Mbps connection is sufficient for power users in a family of 4-5.
5. Rare downtime, once in 2-3 months but when it happens the internet goes down for a good 6-12 hours which is unacceptable in today's world.
Tata Play:
1. Poor loaded latency compared to Airtel.
2. Customer care and after sales support is excellent. I always got a callback from them in less than 1 hour and they always resolve complaints in less than 4 hours of time. This is pretty good. Although Tata has also cut down on the number of service engineers and only one guy has to attend all the complains which is unfair given the number of customers TPF has in our area.
3. Better uptime compared to Airtel and internet never went down for more than 3-4 hours for me unless there is some major outage.
4. Heavy DPI and a lot of websites and APIs are blocked which is kind of a bummer for me. Browsing feels sluggish compared to airtel. What makes it even worse is that some websites won't load on TPF at all. One has to fight through their escalation matrix to get things working but imo it's not worth the effort.
5. Expensive when compared to Airtel, even their long term plans are very expensive and they try to bundle a lot of OTT crap which I hate.
Overall both ISPs are great and have niggles from time to time but I will still opt for Airtel over TPF if given an option. That is just a personal preference as I feel browsing and streaming experience on Airtel is great. Having a sluggish browsing experience defeats the purpose of having a broadband connection so TPF is not for me.
