Ya Max agreed the router has a MAC, infact all network devices have a MAC. But still the speed is set on ur line, i.e each line is limited to a certain speed.So even if u replace the router u would get the speed alloted to ur line, nothing more or less than that even if u use username and password of someone who has subscribed for high speed connection.So speed is dependent on the line (which has been allotted a speed by the server of the ISP).

Max i don't think so it is tied to MAC, it is controll on server side and it is related to your Phone number so no matter what user name and password you use it will only give u 64k water, untile and unless pipe is opned by network guy, they are very smart. And if you don't know MAC address can be changed so it is not at all reliable method, just google it you will get tools, and under linux i think you have ready to use command.

uh...if you didn't get me then check out how TCP / IP works. May be then you will understand the difference between a "dedicated" line (leased line) and your lines which are _not_ in any sense "dedicated" or "leased lines" for them to "tie" your speeds to your _line_. There is _no_ such thing as a _direct_ line from you to the server....

Agreed its not a dedicated line to a server but there are different telephone numbers.For every telephone number there is a limit of speed which is set bec u of which u get a speed what u get at ur home/office.So speed is set at the server end, so i would suggest u to take another router from ur friend or someone else and try connecting it at ur place. U would still get the same speed which u were getting with ur own router, after doing this ur doubt would be cleared....

^^ But, with Tata Indicom BB, you dont get a telephone number... just a telephone wire via which you get your connection...

Ya Vince still its the same logic for the telephone line. Ur line is set to a speed and not anything else.If u want to check it, tell ur friend (who has 512kbps line) to login with ur user id & password and check the speed, ur friend will still get 512kbps speed.So bottomline is it depends on the line which is connected to ur pc which is set to a particular speed by the ISP. Hope that helps...

imranais Ok. I think we got confused. See, Tata Indicom BB is delivered on cat5 near my place. So, I thought you were talking about the cat5 delivery method. If its DSL then yep, it should be tied into the telephone number. My bad

Ok now its a clear picture... On CAT5 cable it depends on MAC, u r right on that point Max and on telephone cable(DSL) it depends on the line which is allotted a particular speed.Have Fun..!
