kedarisv: Does anybody have information how FTA channel is added. Are signals simply captured and put on service or permission is taken from that FTA channel?

Eventhough the channel is initially FTA. DTH operators charge a hefty amount as a carriage fee

DTH GETS 25 CRORES CARRIAGE FEE
Tata Sky and Dish TV both charge carriage fees from new channels.
According to sources, the two players have already made an estimated Rs 20-25 Crore from the new channels that bank on them for quick access to a huge subscriber base.
Dish TV MD Jawahar Goel said: "I agree carriage fee is being charged by the DTH players. I believe Dish TV would be able to earn up to Rs 50 Crore this year by charging carriage fee." He added that Dish TV expects to earn about Rs 100 Crore by next year.
Analysts believe that the expanding DTH subscriber base is will help broadcasters have access to a larger subscriber base. "Like the cable industry, DTH players will have to bank on both carriage fee and subscription fees to become profitable in the long run," said a media analyst.
Tata Sky MD Vikram Kaushik also confirmed "We have started charging a carriage fee to accommodate channels that are not already on our platform. Also, if a new channel wants instant access to our 2 million subscriber base, we charge a carriage fee from that broadcaster."

Agreed about carriage fee charged for such channels. But if a very popular FTA channel (like B4U Music or 9XM) is to be brought on board, what happens then?
Or is it therefore this FTA channels missing on TATASKY :(

As per media news, COLORS would be free-to-air initially, so I don't think that Tata Sky can add it to any package.
'Packages' are basically created to calculate the number of subscriber interested in watching that channel and pay that channel based on these numbers. (as it worked with NEO). But for FTA channel, anyways TATASKY doesn't need to pay.

Tatasky will charge you even for FTA channels and they can put them in a package. Eg. U2, Chutti, Surya, Kiran which are all FTA but you need to ... Even 9X is FTA.

FTA channels are added after getting consent from the respective broadcaster. They cannot simply uplink them. Now they also need get money from the broadcaster for airing their channel.

Popular or unpopular. FTA or Pay channel. All need to pay carriage fees if they want to show their channel in Tatasky. That is why India tv still in Tatasky.

Oh didn't knew abt U2, etc that SUN package needed to subscribe to watch it. BTW 9X is not FTA. It is now a paid channel

Agreed that (less popular) FTA channels may be paying carriage fees to remain on-board (like INDIA TV :) ), but if a paid channel also paying carriage fee then what's meaning of 'pay'. Who is actually paying them?
As per theory we pay to watch 'pay' channel.

Why would any sane person want to watch soapy gec channels be it star plus or sun tv. The govt should ban all this crap and shoot ekta kapoor. They're turning the great mythologies into soap operas, anyone seen ekta kapoor's mahabharat ? NGC and history channel ftw.
