DNA: Mumbai: Coming soon: Fingerprints and webcams in cyber cafes

Cyber cafes fight shy of fingerprints - Mumbai - Cities - The Times of India
Cyber cafe owners say that there have been a decline in the number of users especially women and members of the minority community. "They find the existing rules an invasion of their privacy and very few of them visit ourcafes these days. Abroad, unintrusive devices like webcams placed outside the cafes maintain a record of people entering the cafes,'' said Karan Singh, manager of a Sify cyber outlet in Colaba.

He said Sify is now planning to implement a software in all its cyber outlets which will record every visitor. "We will also scan the ID/PAN/ driving licence of the users and store both the visual image and the scanned data in our central server. When the cops ask for information we will be able to provide it instantly,'' Singh said.

btw this is already being done in kolkata

total violation of article 20 clause 3 and right to privacy.
"(3) No person accused of any offence shall be compelled to be a witness against himself. "

guilty until proven innocent.

Its pity that no cyber cafe owner would challenge this.

mumbai is the India's police state.cctv in buses, streets and now this.

this will be the norm even for private use.this is internet 2.

you think i joke about all this.Do you realize how bad it is,how serious it is.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:@: madness: and there are still people here who think that all i normal and nothing to worry about.
Hey chump when the police comes at night and takes you away it aint normal.

Whats the problem in this ? Everywhere in the world you have to give some form of id to use a cyber cafe , in India since these id's can be easily faked / procured , this is a safe way

fingerprints are for criminals. There is a thing known as innocent until proven guilty, there is a thing known as privacy. Why don't you give your fingerprint,Eris scan,DNA sample.YOu are a child and dont know what is really going around.Talk to any civil rights activist and they will tell you the consequences of having this.we dont live in china or africa where dictatorship is there. We live in a free country.Read the preamble and fundamental rights. These rights are there to restrict the govt.

Sorry paranoia boy but with that kind of vocabulary and incoherency , you look like the kid here What exactly do you propose ? There shouldn't be any kind of verification before using a cybercafe ? So i can go to my nearest cybercafe , register an anonymous email account , send a threatening email account to the president which then will never be traced back to me , and a lot of resources will be wasted in the investigation

you dont think out of the box.your mindset is very narrow.Id card(eg school, college, driver license)should be more than suffice for any browsing at a cyber cafe.
What you arent understanding is that this is being done for acclamating you for a police state.

O well its pointless to wake up guys like you who have no will, who follow the status quo,who are dictated what to do by the state, who operate in a hive mind mentality.

You wouldn't mind having to biometrically sign on to browse net from your home.
Already laptops are coming with face recognition and fingerprint reader.WHy? it aint for security, its for the future internet.

here you go NY times talking about this

ps:admin this thread should be in the net neutrality section.plz move it

Yeah but why the ID Cards , the preamble guarantees us freedom and rights , we dont live in a police state . The ID Card is something used to identify you , that you Mr XYZ used the cybercafe at a particular time , you fingerprint would serve the same purpose , or are you worried the government would try to implicate you somewhere using your finger prints :whistle:Your thinking out of the box argument is lame , you confuse thinking out of the box with bashing everything the government plans to do

i wouldn't even say id card but so many perverts email just for fun the cyber cafe owners would need some form of id.fingerprinting is making you criminal and violating article 20 clause 3.Even 5yrs ago only criminals were fingerprinted. Now its for everything. The future would be like minority report aka precrime. If you love this so much why dont you take the initiative and ask the police to have fingerprint readers in your home or better yet cctv cameras in your home to keep you safe.

Precisely my point , and since in India IT IS easy to forge a card or bribe to get one , fingerprinting is a better option , and the danger from terrorists etc is much more than perverts , make your position clear , do you support some form of identification for using a cyber cafe or not . When my PC wasnt working , i went to a cybercafe , i didnt have any tangible ID card so i showed him a visiting card saying it was mine and he believed me :)

fingerprinting is totally different. It brings moral, ethical questions and most important of all it removes self incrimination which is a fundamental right. The govt should increase the security features in normal id cards like holograph, magnetic strip which cant be faked but i am totally against a biometric national id card.
