Just hooked up a New Western Digital My Passport 1TB External USB 3.0/2.0 Portable Hard Drive. My Dell Inspiron 580 running Windows 7 doesn't see/recognize the new HD. I loaded the WD driver 1/19/2011 1.0.00090, but the Dell/Windows 7 still doesn't recognize the WD-HD. I switched USB ports but still same result. Does anyone have any suggestions before I call Western Digital Tech Support?

Hi Vinus,

I am glad to help you out. Based on your post, it may be a system settings issue. Just like to check with you, after connection the hard drive LED is blinking or any vibration? Could you give me some more details about that? For the meantime, I suggest you some basic troubleshooting steps that may help you to solve the issue.

Step 1:
  • Go into Disk Management and in the bottom-right panel look for a ribbon which labelled as Raw and has no drive name.
  • Right-click on that & choose Change Drive Letters and Paths.
  • Click Add and accept the default letter or choose preferred letter from list.
  • Click OK.
Step 2:

If the HDD appear in device manager. So please follow the below steps to update the drivers.
  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Select Device Manager .
  • In the Device Manager, expand "Universal Serial bus controllers".
  • Right click on your controller and select Properties.
  • In the new window, click on the "Driver" tab and select "uninstall". After uninstall, then select install and press ok.
If possible, try to change USB cable and connect WD My Passport with another working computer and run the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics in system. Please refer to the link below for Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics:

Hope it helps.
