There could be another reason why WhatsApp is working on this feature, though. WhatsApp backups to Google Drive currently do not count against your account storage quota. However, WABetaInfo speculates that this could change in the future, with Google only offering a limited plan with up to 2GB of free space per user for WhatsApp chat backups. This means that larger backups could partially count against your Google account storage quota.

Why would someone want to turn off backup encryption unless they want to get caught by NCB or Navika

Encrypted backups are of no use in India. Read Sushubh's post above. Police will just ask you to give up the passcode or turn it off by force.

I have a doubt. What if I choose the other non-password option, the 64-bit key one. That way there's no way for me to memorise it unless I'm like Shakuntala Devi. Then just never reveal the place I've saved it offline to anyone? It could be ½inch flash drive buried somewhere till I need it right?
