While we may somehow convince our parents to use other apps, problem comes if their colleagues are not on other apps. This leads to dejection and ultimately fall back to their existing app. For eg. Signal.

Our media parrots out what Western media say. Some people suggested signal so our guys go ga ga. But these personages are American suggesting an American product. We know who owns Telegram. There no way they would recommend a 'Russian ' product.

Telegram team is based in Dubai I believe. Russian government hates Durov I believe. Probably would be dead by now if he had not left Russia. Durov moved to West Indies based on online information but apparently he moves around a lot probably because of the Russian threat.

I prefer talking to people on WhatsApp because chats don't get deleted very easily. I actually use it for keeping a trace and tack.

Had it been Telegram, two taps and the entire chat history is gone.

I've been thinking of this, since when did we wanted permanent records of our conversations?

I'm not talking apps but in general, in the real world when we speak, we tend to say things without thinking much and causes embarassment and all. Which of course will be forgotten a while later and then we'd have another chance without having the burden of the earlier conversation.

Imagine talking to someone in person while they are actively recording it to a phone. When did we reach this?

I'd say all messages sent by chat apps should have an expiry date unless it's enabled per chat by both parties? Idk if that's sounds impossible or not practical but something to think of.

For the paranoids among us, someone on HN said if you ever typed anything into a comment box/chat box anywhere there's a permanent searchable record of that traceable back to your ip at the time of commenting.

i am not sure about other apps but from what i know, telegram allows you to delete your messages and complete chats (on both ends) without leaving a trace. in regular cloud based chats. e2e chats of course has timer based functionality as well. whatsapp i believe has a limit on removal of old chats and removing new messages leaves a message deleted message?

Yeah they do but I'm not talking about apps, just the whole idea of permanent records of conversation.

Of course telegram has that, but without people to message on that doesn't matter. WhatsApp can be set to delete after 7 days automatically.

Maybe this is the wrong thread for this 😅, I believe personal conversations shouldn't have a permanent record anywhere, unless opted in.

But I can also see the other side to this argument as well. People shouldn't do very personal conversations online I guess.
