I saw several FB Pages which has "WhatsApp" button. Touching that button would open WhatsApp to send message to that FB Page owner.
Besides several stuff I had shopped recently from local market, people send photos of their products through WhatsApp.
So it would be difficult for other Chat apps to gain all these customers and become mainstream like WhatsApp.

I found calls over Telegram has absolutely no disturbance as compared to a WhatsApp call with a relative (he has some sort of fetish about calling ONLY thru WhatsApp & at the same time bragging that he has 3 Vodafone sims with free calls, as if that's unique to that company🤦) Another friend says the same thing about Signal calls.

Experience with calls on both have been the last 3 weeks.

i mean with facebook investing in jio... that is not going to happen. not that government has other reasons to ban them. facebook and twitter are both behaving like house pets with respect to online moderation on their platforms. whatsapp i bet has already seen the loss to telegram for large groups after forwarding restrictions were applied on their platform. not sure if it is still in place. of course, the incredible large size supported by telegram groups is also helping the cause. i can totally see telegram becoming the hotspot of hate in the coming years. just because of the migration of these groups from whatsapp.

my experience with telegram audio calls has been pretty awful. though they have made certain changes in recent builds which supposedly improves the quality a lot. haven't used it since these updates. signal audio and video calls are supposed to be very good as well. haven't used these personally so hard to comment.

The reason why Telegram is awesome is because no one's making any money. They were running on some old stock market fund or something all this time. It almost ran out

And they provide all these features, not to mention unlimited cloud storage. The number of huge files I've seen on telegram is amazing.

telegram is mostly funded by durov who is a multi-billionaire. the initial plan was to generate funding from gram which did not work out well. so they are now looking at native ads in channels and groups(?) to generate revenue. it's not like this is going to make it a profitable organization. with 500 million+ users, and cloud storage unmatched by any other player in the market... i guess they decided to monetize the platform through non personal/private chats. remains to be seen how it would play out. durov has been quite open about his views about telegram.

and the best thing he is that he understands that most telegram users are using telegram because of cloud based chats.

If Telegram has to survive, they will have to put limitations on file sizes too I guess. lol They can't keep giving this much storage forever.

tbh. it is probably not as bad as one might think. when you share a media file already shared by someone, it is not reuploaded. plus if they are doing smart deduplication at their end like Dropbox and other companies... though probably not easy to do with all encryption around... it's possible that a file shared 1000s of times on the platform might have a single core copy mirrored to cdns around the world or something. though it would be nice if they do start restricting public piracy groups. it is the one thing that hurts its reputation the most.
