As of date, the procedures to change the OS is extremely complicated and there is no ready to use OS that works on all models for sure. Unlocking/Rooting/Flashing is a lot more difficult for the semi-geek than replacing Windows with Ubuntu/Fedora, etc.
Changing the OS is very complicated, because there need to be compatible drivers for modem and other hardware stuff. And they are not so easily available.
As @mega_processor said, one of his friends installed Android 2.1 on his Wave. When I was having the Samsung Wave GT-S8500, even I had installed Android, Froyo it was. But then the touch was difficult to calibrate, no SIM would be detected, etc. The OS worked perfectly, but the hardware didn't support the OS.
Yes it is not so easy for every but its possible.....I will not recommend anyone who's not sure about the process to perform as it may make your phone dead...
Ubuntu actually plans to offer downloads of Ubuntu Touch for multiple Android phones in the future. They might end up supporting other platforms as well.Their plan is to both sell Ubuntu Touch loaded phones and offer builds for popular models running other platforms.
