WiFi security on MTNL broadband

I have problems with my laptop not connecting to home my WiFi network if the SSID is hidden (beyond the scope of this section) but I got some interesting info at the Microsoft forum which I would like to share with you.
For those who are concerned about their WiFi security check out this site https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm which generates random passwords 63 – 64 characters long.
I have three laptops (on WiFi) & a desktop connected via a LAN cable.
Using the desktop I generated a password on this site, pasted it in the router setting page then saved it on a pendrive & transferred it to the laptops thru the pendrive, you can repeat this at periodic intervals or when you want to change the pass key in the router & machines connected via WiFi. I use WPA2 PSK & AES as it’s considered as currently the best security available. I hope this helps others who have the same concerns.

There is an old thread on this topic but I didn't want to bump it now as whats discussed in it, is not quite the same. Maybe Admin if this is considered relevant can make this a sticky or add to Wiki

Those using Wifi please post what type of security (if at all) you use. If your SSID is hidden or not etc

socrates I'm using Linksys WRT54G2 router(looks chick). I have disabled the SSID broadcast and used WPA2 PSK with AES samse as urs. And I have even employed mac filtration that is the mac id given in the router can only connect to the router. And the password employed in router is alpha numeric with caps and small alphabets. And if ur SSID broadcast is disabled than no one can detect ur router or can it be????:notallowed:

@rohaan I have been using the same for last 2.5 yrs ie WPA2 PSK & AES with MAC filter & SSID hidden but a new laptop Acer 3810TZ cannot connect to my wifi network if the SSID is hidden but works v well if the SSID is NOT hidden

I highly doubt anyone would get into your wifi even if it's on WEP(unless of-course you live around super smart people like yourselves- I fortunately or unfortunately do not have that privilege.) In any-case I had a question- Does WPA2 offer anything more besides enhanced security over wep. I currently use WPA Personal .Therefore I personally just see no point in taking the trouble. =)

never underestimate the people living around your place. i personally do not broadcast SSID. use WPA2. and i am still usually scared. too bad recent operating systems now show wireless networks which are not even broadcasting SSIDs.

=)I know I'm safe cause first off all my wifi doesn't even cover my whole house. So my neighbors on the same floor are unable to receive an signals.For those above and below me, they have their own unprotected networks. Above lives a good friend and below some old people. So there is limited or no scope for any intrusion. No technically inclined people around me. Rather no one I personally know knows as much as I do. But then again that is why I like staying active on such forums.

Socrates what u can do is that go to the wireless connection and right click on it. There is an option to add new wireless network. Add a new wifi network with the name same as the SSID of ur router and the password of the router login and click on add. This should do the need full. And enable the SSID for the first time when u connect to the wifi after adding ur wireless network and disable it after u disconnect the wifi.And one more thing that i do on my VAIO is that to disconnect from the router i dont click on disconnect to disconnect i rather switch off the wifi of my laptop through the button provided on the laptop. And when u want to connect to the wifi just simply switch on the button and ur laptop will automatically connect to the wifi. No need to disconnect and connect through the wireless connection.:yahoo:And no matter whosoever says anything never broadcast ur SSID because if there is a computer geek out there he can crack ur WPA2 AES & PSK security easily.:notallowed::cool2:
