i did get a fresh copy of portable version. i guess i would try with the installable version to give it another go.

how are you installing? skip the screen asking for product key. it activates on its own.

I have already installed using the media tools upgrade option. Downloaded the iso later. If I need to do a fresh install from the iso,I would need a key. Thats what it said while completing the iso creation.

from what i have read. the key screen would have a skip button. like with windows 8. and it would activate on its own. as long as the hardware is same. even windows 8 let you skip the key screen. you ended up getting a one month trial iirc.

in most cases, you should just consider resetting windows instead of reinstalling it. a new hard disk would most likely break the validation of your free license. so there's that.

alarm is kind of nice. it muted the audio in other apps.

So a year ago a relative's PC (which had win 7 preinstalled & was upgraded to win 8 via the upgrade offer) crashed & he had to replace the hard drive. The person who installed a new HDD installed win 7 via "alternate means" & I had simply helped them install Win 8 using the key they had used for the upgrade

Since then, when win 8.1 arrived, it seems Win 8.1 update keeps failing as many pre-requisites kept failing & hence they had even disabled updates - it was going in a viscous cycle of update-backout.

Fast forward now, no reserve option was received (obviously as Win7/Win 8.1 seems to be the route to upgrade and not Win8). I have been contacted to see if I can get Win10 on it running.

Any options? Whats the best way to make sure Win 8.1 installs - as I presume that would automatically take care of getting the option to upgrade to Win10.

Willing to format PC itself. All Suggestions welcome

Try installing 8.1 using ISO. Clean install?

Yup. Do a clean install. If it won't activate via Internet, use the activation via phone option and select US as country. It will show a toll free number, use Skype to call this number and follow ivr steps.
