The only feature that's preventing Signal from wider adoption is automatic cloud backups like others. They launched group calling recently as well.

They are purposefully avoiding it to maintain privacy.
WhatsApp chats were allegedly leaked from chat backups in Cloud.

yup. migration to signal is not going to be easy for most folks. taking backups manually. and then copying that folder somewhere. Remembering the secret phrase. use it to recover. even whatsapp recovering from google drive backup failed for me few weeks ago. ended up with a blank slate. though i guess most people keep their phones for years so it is not really that big of a deal for them.

Surely a third party can easily launch an app that does this? Encrypts your signal chat, backs up on some cloud service and allows restoration as well

Would be a good feature for Dropbox to add

I just take local backups when I'm switching or doing a reset, Google Drive backups are not encrypted.

I just zip the whatsapp folder with no compression using zarchiver, move it to the other phone, extract and setup whatsapp and it will ask to restore. It always works.

And status updates. I know the people around here won't be into it but people are. So far signal is still only appealing to a handful of people that wants privacy first.

Sealed messages, verifying contacts, all those options are stupidly confusing and trust me will definitely scare people away.

I was going to mention that Signal does not have Status updates which is used by alot from some of my contacts (both young and old). It there ritual to put status update (any quotes, videos, etc) on WhatsApp every day
They will surely not like Signal (or Telegram), as its just plain Messenger.

Looking at the out pouring of our media about suggesting alternative apps for WhatsApp, its quite amazing that they knowingly or otherwise have begun to look like cheerleaders for Signal.

Yeah especially the one with happy birthday status update to someone but want the entire contacts to know
