Sigh. Kabhi kabhi I see the retention plans on this forum and feel that was I wrong to choose MTNL over Airtel when I first switched to Broadband?

Even though, I don't expect drastic changes in market due to Rjio, they are actually starting from zero customers and invested big money till now.. They have to offer some great offers to get their money back. If the difference between their tariff and incumbents are not wider, then they can't get desired results IMHO.
Further it seems like, Rjio may bring voice via VoIP only. VoLte is not matured by now and so I am not sure how it may help Rjio. So they have to focus on data conscious customers, I guess.
Let's wait and see...

I don't know why people are obsessed about 2G scam. 2G scam has nothing to do with poor Internet market in India.
In fact, the more expensive 3G & 4G auctions depressed the telecom industry in India. BJP forced UPA to make spectrum auction as a milking cow. The Govt got revenue from auction but telecom industry piled up huge debts. Consequently they transferred the burden to consumers. As a result, 3G was a failure in India. Even after 5 years, telecom industry is not interested to invest in 3G Infrastructure development.
Now telecom industry is rushing for 4G launch even without unlocking the full potential of 3G. The result will be the same - Expensive Data plans & limited connectivity.

There you go, at least one operator is vocal about exploiting 3G to its full potential before jumping into 4G bandwagon.
The thing with Aircel is despite 5 years into 3G era, their presence is far limited outside Tamil Nadu.
They're already playing catchup to the big three telecos.
But yeah, auctions are the reason Telecom Industry which used to be poster boy of Indian economy is so struggling for profits now. With the incoming Jio, I feel for these existing Telecos.
It might be a while before Internet in India can catch up to the global standards..
well the problem is perception. people on aircel would dump aircel and jump to other operators because of the flashy new keyword 4g lte and the promise of much faster internet on the move. of course, aircel can counter the damage by offering respectable speeds over their 3g networks. which i believe are still better than what airtel seems to be offering through 4g. for example. i barely managed to cross 14mbps when i tested their network inside their store. now i imagine that 3g can easily deliver that speed and it should be enough for a few years for mobile users. hell, i do not even get 4mbps on my wired broadband connection.

Big players like Airtel who have sufficient capital assets are taking smart approach. Simultaneously developing 3G & 4G market. Airtel is investing 6400 Cr for further development of 3G.
The problem is that even all this investment isn't going to produce good results for consumers anytime soon.

Well, Aircel seems to be pretty good from what I saw. Yet to test their services in the metros. So can't comment.
But it's a very valid point, and given the fact that 4G is still not mature enough in India, operators who don't have 4G license can offer better 3G experience.
Sadly, the big three have a similar plans, and the rest of the telecos have a very limited presence.
If they can't offer full 3G capabilities in terms of speeds, least they can do is offer plans with better FUP, and that's what Aircel seems to be doing.
But with limited presence, even better plans is of little use.

People who're rushing for 4G are blindly following the trend. I personally think, 4G won't be affordable at least until next couple of years. Even more.
What's the use of 20 Mbps 4G speed if you have to pay 300-400 Rs per GB of Data?
In contrast if there are cheaper plans and reliable speed for 3G (say 50 rs / GB). People will happily choose 3G.
I would happily choose 3G / 4 Mbps speed / Rs 50 per GB over 4G / 30 Mbps speed / Rs 200 per GB
