Indian players will forever be playing catch-up to everyone. And forget about the western (or east asian) ISPs. It will hard enough to catch up to the Chinese, who are now the second largest Net population, with "economies of scale" that will drive any capitalist stark raving drooling mad. Consider this - their Internet revolution started about the same time as India. And they do not allow ANY private players in the ISP business. Consider this and weep![/b]
That is a load of bollox. There is no way china would have 123 million !! net users if their broadband revolution had started at the same time as india . Forget the india - china comparison and tell me do you really believe that china could challenge America in such a short time ?

Since a long time many electronic giants have had their manufacturing bases in china coz of cheap labour. For that simple reason personal computers must be very cheap over there. And if you have easy access to PCs why would it be a big problem to have internet when you have local language and content on it ? China had a huge advantage in the sense that there is only one language. About one-fifth of the world speaks some form of Chinese as their native language and that is an incredible statistic.

Mr Dayanidhi Maran was spot on when he said that for broadband revolution to take off in india we need to make available , content in local languages. It will take some time as we have so many languages but it will happen soon.

How long is 'soon' ? Considering that this is India ''soon' could be another 5 year plan !!!

Statistically China is among the world's largest population on the internet. Their Broadband Revolution really was real broadband, people could stream stuff within seconds, and they broke mbps unlm barrier ages ago. In there, the government is more interested in doing their work than making money, in here, its the opposite - As typical of this may seem coming from a very pissed of Indian, its a fact.

....?

New York -

Chinese Internet users spend nearly two billion hours online each week, while the U.S. audience logs on for 129 million hours per week.

That's the bombshell Dr. Charles Zhang, chairman and CEO of Sohu.com (nasdaq: SOHU - news - people ), dropped last month after ringing the opening bell at the Nasdaq, a milestone for a Beijing-based company.

Zhang reported that, according to his internal research, Chinese Internet users numbered over 150 million--and possibly up to 200 million--and Sohu.com, including all of their properties, was in the top five most trafficked sites in the world. Nielsen NetRatings, which doesn't have statistics for China, reports that the U.S. had 154 million active users in January 2006. This means that China, if Zhang is correct, is at or above the U.S. in the number of Internet users and that these users stay connected far longer each time.

How could the milestone of China surpassing the U.S. in Internet users have gone so unremarked? It turns out that it isn't that easy collecting data on over a billion people in a country as vast as China, where most people are not connected by phone lines.

The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) reports that the number of active Chinese Internet users was 111 million by Dec. 31, 2005, up from 94 million a year earlier. And over the past two years, it has been growing at a steady rate of 18%. However, according to Zhang, the CNNIC polling is conducted by calling fixed line phones. \"Young people do not use fixed line phones. They all have mobile phones,\" Zhang said, explaining why he believes the CNNIC is reporting lower-than-accurate numbers.

Even if we assume that China is still behind the U.S. in terms of users, China definitely wins in another critical area. One of the most valued metrics of Internet usage (especially for advertisers) is time spent online. Chinese users average 15.9 hours per week, while Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ), the most popular Internet site in the U.S., can only get its users to stick around for less than one hour per week (216.5 minutes per month according to ComScore Media Metrix). That's 1.765 billion hours per week online in China, compared with 129 million hours per week online in the U.S.

What's up with all that time online? This is the first time in Chinese history that the nation has been connected. As Zhang explains, \"People log onto the Internet and Sohu.com because, in China, there is no Forbes, Reuters or The Washington Post. Print media was all state-controlled and official, and the Internet filled this void.\" Indeed, according to the CNNIC, 67.9% of online use in China is spent devouring news, more than searching (65.7%) and e-mailing (64.7%). By contrast, only 3% of Yahoo!'s U.S. traffic clicks over to news.*

Moreover, China has a lot more room to grow than the U.S. While roughly half of the U.S. population is actively using the Internet, just 11.7% of the Chinese population is currently plugged in.[/b]
OMG!! CHINA >>>> INDIA

Bull excuse.
Windows and email in hindi has been available since a long time, and even my fruitseller outside knows what what common english terms mean. Heck, bet your ass I could teach him to open Firefox, log onto different sites, and turn it off in 30 mins max.
You should've picked some other excuse to support your claim.

And that's why India will never succeed in anything except I.T Education because 90% Indians are born nerds.
Even corruption still has followers and supporters. This is amazing.

And to the above poster, 'Soon' is an alternative word for Netas and alike for 'Never' and 'Leave me and my monies alone'.

If you read my post properly you will see that the point was whether china's broadband revolution took off at the same time as india's. And you answered that yourself.

My 2nd comment was related to the first one . So again you come up with unwanted info.

Why are you in so much hurry to reply ? Read and understand it first and then reply. Are you telling me that windows and email is local content ? On a sidenote. How the fuc.k can windows and email in hindi be useful to a fruit seller ?

If you think china is any less corrupt than india then you need to take off your chinese glasses !!

The fact is china started working on internet since a long time and they are obsessed with becoming the world's superpower. Also they have a communist regime so decision making and implementation is fast as it's a single authority. I could keep on going all day about this but it will never end.

You got numbers with backup sites to prove your post? 2 years here and there don't matter, fact is India is not as eager to win the broadband race as other countires are. I think you're going to have to stall your 'China started before India' ideology here. When did Broadband take off globally? 2000-2002? Its 2007 and it can hardly be seen in India, your excuse?

Right...

Last I remember, I didn't say this :

tell me do you really believe that china could challenge America in such a short time ?

The article claims China surpasses USA in Broadband sector.

I didn't quite get what excuse you were making up to support the fact broadband scene has been pathetic in India,

"to have internet when you have local language and content on it ?"
"China had a huge advantage in the sense that there is only one language. About one-fifth of the world speaks some form of Chinese as their native language and that is an incredible statistic."

From the looks of it, you were blaming the fact India does not have that "advantage in the sense that there is only one language", the point I derailed in my previous post. Language is an irrelevant point, you can't blame the slow pace of Broadband in India on that.

If you think china is any less corrupt than india then you need to take off your chinese glasses !![/b]

Yet, China is economically better, is *much* richer, has some freakin' Broadband - If they can get all this to their public, then a little corruption here or there is excusable.

The fact is china started working on internet since a long time and they are obsessed with becoming the world's superpower. [/b]
Too bad India isn't, right?

Also they have a communist regime so decision making and implementation is fast as it's a single authority. I could keep on going all day about this but it will never end.[/b]

That's just the way Communism works, and in China's case the people there are actually getting stuff the government promises and in India - We don't. I could go on long about it too, but its pretty much an undeniable point that India just doesn't has what it takes in terms of honesty and hardship to give their people what they want and specially if its Broadband, because if this was otherwise - Then wake the fuck up, we're hosting Commonwealth and the World Cup and its nearing bloody 2010 and we still don't have bandswidth to freakin' stream youtube.com. I connect to Xbox Live and I see High Definiton Trailers for download and those 5 min trailers are 150mb each and in 720p HD quality, and those are supposed to be download in like 15-30 mins max in the rest of the world.
Read this clearly, write this down if you want to : By the time India gets this broadband we want - The world would move into High Definition, and then, even 2mbps will be on HD streamers like what 256kbps is what now on youtube.

And unless and until India gets its act together, the people here actually realise that we're been taken for a ride by old goldy's from 1960's that probably don't even know what service youtube stands for, Indian broadband will stand for only two words for the rest of eternity, and that's 'Stream Lagging', do you want India to be like this? Or is there still some part inside you that says 'india will improve'? 'Cuase I can promise you, you'll be 50 yrs old, sitting on your desktop with probably a 1080i-p LCD Monitor with 2000x2000 resolution, and you'll still be saying the very same words you are now. Read this, word by word. And you'll know that if we don't get 2mbps Unlimited this very instant, its just as good as not getting them at all. The World is moving, its going High Definition. Read this and you'll understand :

Now its about time you stop nitpicking points to counter in my post and rant for some immediate unlimited broadband because India can still save itself from the Broadband Crisis its in currently.
