they would not confirm it on paper or email or anywhere. but it is a well known policy. though some users do not face it. and sometimes torrents do work during day times. but for most users and at most times, they are very restricted during the day time. but they work fine after 10pm till around 10am. fact remains, if you plan it properly, you can still consume 75GB of data easily within a month. actually much faster with torrents. you just have to schedule them for nights.

Read through the airtel section, you'll get an idea.

So there is no solution but to just wait until night time to download stuff?

Will calling Airtel CC help?

Also, is this limitation only for new connections, or does it apply to existing ones as well (friends with Airtel connections don't get this problem).

Funny thing, my Tata Photon+ connection performed far, far better than this. They charged me 1200 bucks for 10GB of d/l limit, but at least gave me full 120kbps+ downloading speed.

well. it applies to old and new connections. and as i said above. some users are lucky enough to not get throttled. i was not throttled for a long time but it applies on my account too. calling airte customer care would not help. they would probably come out with a lame excuse like they do not support torrents or stuff like that. if you want to try, go ahead. scheduling your torrents at night is the only way out. and i am on a 4mbps connection too. at night time, i get full speed on my connection on torrents. trust me, 400-500kBps is pretty amazing for download torrents. shit gets downloaded very fast.

No, calling cc will certainly not help in this case. And, the throttling seems arbitrary, admin, here has an old connection yet his speeds are throttled, so certainly not only for new connections.

actually no. my current connection is hardly 10 months old. i was not throttled on my older connection but i assumed that was a privilege given to me by airtel. no such luck on my current connection :D i might be wrong about this but i was probably throttled during the day time during the last months on my older connection.

If that is true, then I believe that connections older than 4-5 years or so aren't throttled. At least thats what I've seen.

i doubt so. there are users here who have been airtel customers for a long time. and almost everyone here is throttled. there are some exceptions but older accounts do not really have any special rights. in fact, older users got fcuked with time with automated/forced plan changes.

While, I've never seen airtel connections throttled at any of friends' places with older connections, most have been a victim of automated/forced plan changes.

As a temporary workaround, you can use zbigz.com to download the torrent and then download it via http. the free version does have some limitations though.
