Airtel does not quite activate the double speed on demand, as you have noticed.
There seems to a fair bit of back-end checking and so on they do, so in my case I had to badger them 3 times and it took 3 weeks, but I finally did get the double speed. Problem is, it is double speed only one way (downstream). This may not matter to some, but I had to mention it.

This is wrong information! Check my speedtest results pasted below for my upload speed. I have Swift 1099 with 512 kbps speed, and activated double speed now.

Bangalore seems to be exploding with a lot of people getting this offer activated over the last 2 months, from a lot of localities. Airtel Broadband has also been expanding its area of coverage, so friends who were stuck with BSNL until now are now gleefully jumping onto the (supposedly) better bandwagon.

Want a fairly complete summary of the 100 Rupees top-up plan from Airtel which doubles your Internet connection speed? A good option might be to check out what PC World India has to say about it including observations of the result, over at - Airtel's Double-speed Unlimited DSL plans for home, with details including FUP
Or you can take the longer route of reading all 262 posts of this thread so far, and find out every minute detail. :-)

What plan are you on?

Guys the page now says we also get 100rs free call value.. is it only for a2a or whether is it applicable to a 2 others also??

and has anyone tried this offer on the 499rs 1mbps plan??

I bet its only for A2A fixed line

Sorry for the plug, but all of your questions will be answered at this URL - http://www.pcworld.in/news/airtels-double-speed-unlimited-plans

What do u mean by that? U say only the download speed doubles & not the upload? If so i'm a bit worried as i upload files often.
Yep, that is exactly what I am saying, and that does create a problem, so I wanted to make sure that anyone taking up this offer understands it. The upload speed remained unchanged for me, which can cause a problem if I'm trying to host a temporary FTP, or if I want to maintain my ratio on a private tracker forum.

You also need to remember that the lines used by Airtel do not support uploads in excess of 1 Mbps.
Whoa! Thanks a lot for this info, I think that explains what I am seeing. But I would still like to see the reason and proof for this, before I can fully accept this.

My profile says it! I am on the 1699 plan - 1 Mbps. My downstream speeds doubled. My upstream did not.

Well, I have got the monthly bills to prove this. The 100 Rupees call value discount is absolute, without conditions. So it applies to calls you make from your landline to mobile, other landline providers, WLL, STD, ISD... whatever. Keep in mind, this is in addition to the 100 Rupees call value discount you already get on the 1699 plan.As for the 499 plan, I don't suppose it qualifies for this special top-up, the 100 rupees thing is only for unlimited plans, and that too specific ones.

Guys.... instead of speculating on the things I have said, go and just read the full details at the ( PC World India ) URL I have pasted at the beginning of this post. You will see details of the plans, tables that describe before-and-after 100 Rupees top-up, caveats that you should be aware of, and possible issues you might run into.

spammer! :Dthe question that comes to my mind... even if airtel doubles your upload speeds, they might not have allowed that much upload speed on your line. from what i know the settings they have put on your line are visible from your model backend. maybe that is the reason why doubling speeds does not increase your upload speeds.

Well I shall just state facts of upload - I used to get 91-112 KBps upload speeds before on this 1Mbps line, and still get the same even after doubling. So you take a guess what that might mean.Same story at homes of colleagues in Bangalore, and one other guy. We had taken the 1699 plan when it came, and embraced the 100-rupee offer the minute it was revealed to us. :P

Couldn't resist showing off. My first day of 1Mbps unlimited @ 1199. See data for 7th below.

The reason for no change in the upload speeds is because traditional ADSL2 does not support a higher upload speed.

ITU G.992.3 is an ITU (International Telecommunication Union) standard, also referred to as ADSL2 or G.DMT.bis. It optionally extends the capability of basic ADSL in data rates to 12 Mbit/s downstream and 3.5 Mbit/s upstream (with a mandatory capability of ADSL2 transceivers of 8 Mbit/s downstream and 800 Kbit/s upstream). Actual speeds may reduce depending on line quality - usually the most significant factor in line quality is the distance from the DSLAM to the customer's equipment.
