Airtel replaced my ONT and now suddenly they're claiming I've exhausted my data cap

Update: I got a call from an Airtel rep today. She told me how the data usage have been so high.

I asked her to tell me my data usage before 13th (when we had our old Huawei router). She said she only has access to 10-15 days worth of usage and on 10th 11th 12th September, we were consuming between 17 to 30 GB per day.

Then it said 0 data usage on 13th and 14th and from 15th onwards she said we were using between 400 to 600 GB data per day.

How can this be possible? Same people, same date usage patterns but the logging is so different? The only logical answer I can think of is the new router is reporting inflated figures and that's what I told her. She said she'll check that out and contact me again but before that, I want to figure out what could be the reason for such high data usage reports.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to monitor data usage on the Router itself? The model is AOT5221ZY and it seems to be unlocked as I can change most of the settings.

I have a NAS connected to my router (just like the last 2 years) and that's how I remotely connect to my router.

If anyone has any insights, or ideas that can help me figure out what can I do, please speak up. Because if the new router is showing usages that are THIS high, then it looks like I'll be running into the FUP issue a lot now

@phoenix10386 My dad sent its pictures to me and it looks new. Is there a way I can check if it's new or old? Like by going into the router settings or something?

@Rickysin I'm not even at home right now. My parents are the only ones using my Internet via a Deco mesh router. I watch content on my Plex server through my NAS and I've been doing that for over 2 years (Everything is 1080p max, no 4K)

If it was a malware or something, it would've shown up even before the router replacement, wouldn't it? The inflated figures are only AFTER the new router was installed at my home.

Prima facie, you can see if the device came in a fresh box, with packing, and whether it bears any scratches (may require closer inspection than your father might be comfortable doing) or signs of use such as dust deposit. If the replacement came with the adapter as well, check the wire for signs of dust deposit.

Next, you might also be able to pull device logs to see how far back do the logs go.

Together, you can be reasonably sure either way.

does airtel still restart data usage if you change plan? i can only suggest to do it if it still works. and if fup is reached again in next cycle, best to start looking at alternatives. getting airtel to resolve this is probably not going to be an easy task.

it's crazy though that trai lets them get away with providing no data monitoring to their customers when the data usage has a limit. even excitel show session data and they do not even have an official limit. i can at least track usage over a period of hours or days by simply restarting the onu.

They emailed me the day by day data usage from 11th Sep to 21st Sep (keep in mind my Internet stopped working on 13th and router was replaced on 15th evening).

The cap was applied on 21st. It's weird how even on 1-2 Mbps apparently my parents have used 84 Gigs (I couldn't use my Plex server remotely on such low speeds) whereas on a full 200 Mbps we could collectively only use 55 GB max

Anyway, they have raised a ticket, and she says they are investigating it internally. They have also assigned a service engineer, wonder what he's gonna do.

Let's see what happens. If anyone has any suggestions that I should keep in mind, please let me know

If you think that was a good way to talk about people on a public forum, okay, here goes a paraphrase:

"the government doesn't give a fuck about anything unless the elections are near, talking to their ministers and MLAs feels like banging head on the wall. Even the folks at government offices are bunch of idiots who have zero clue about anything."

Now do you see how it is unparliamentary? Taken any further, it shall be incendiary enough that either the post shall be edited or I shall be warned and/ or banned, for trying to make a point and evoke some sense. Can you use this language elsewhere except from behind keyboards? That was the point. I am not offended, I can't possibly be offended with someone inconsequential to me or my existence. What I said was about the attitude and repercussions in society.

I never said stick to Airtel or any other particular provider. I have tried to suggest that each person's situation is unique and requirements are unique. Network that is 99.9% perfect for your needs could go to the toilet for someone else's. Each one needs to evaluate their needs and pick the one that suits their needs. Change if the needs are not being met. That's the point of having, enabling and nurturing options.

Yet, somehow, for decades since the networks have existed in this country, people seem to be after the elusive "best" that never is. With Jio, people have another option, and they rightly/ wrongly point of flaws of other networks, even calling names like airtel and what not. Well, say there is ONE NATION ONE NETWORK, as is the dream of the regime. Say the network then flexes its muscle as it is wont to do, because history of monopolist environments. Then people will want options, once again. When you think about it, when you read psychology, philosophy, about human mind and thinking, you see patterns and you find them amusing yet revealing. You start acknowledging everything for what it is.

What I did was simply for the betterment of forum environment. It has nothing to do with me. I don't post often, I don't frequent. It's been years since I posted, I only started again a few days ago. But, for new people and the regulars, the forum needs to be a civil and polite place where opinions are welcome, understood, and acknowledged. Where people talk about people as people, not condescendingly as if the ones being talked about are inferior and the ones talking superior. That behavior, if allowed to persist, shall and does become the downfall, first of the forum, and largely of societal fabric. That's it.
