lol. i think windows mobile and symbian were lot simpler. i am not really sure if there were official app stores. i do think microsoft operated an official windows mobile store which was then renamed to windows phone store. users did not have to login with a company account. they installed software like they did on computers. this is a big deal because smartphones back then were used by people who actually used computers unlike today. 
Apple just took it mainstream. in the process creating a massive market for competitors who would eventually do the same thing to do them what microsoft did to them in the 90s.

^precisely, they took it to the mainstream who were able to adapt more easily because many things were more user friendly. Just download itunes. Search-> Click-> Install@admin - What video did you link . Can you be a bit more clear :upset:
to be fair, iPhone could not have existed before it arrived. the technologies were very new. in fact, it was Apple that enabled companies like corning to make raw material like gorilla glass commercially viable. also multi-touch display. also powerful mobile processors. 
they created the entire ecosystem. but you cannot take away the credit from the companies that actually created the whole concept of PDAs and sold them for years. like palm and compaq (ipaq) etc. as they like to say, apple really has not created a brand new product. they just created better versions of existing products. so iphone was not really a magical device. samsung etc. were already creating similar devices though not as user friendly.

Palm & Compaq actually never created the concept of PDA. It all began when Psion created the Psion Organiser in 1984. Apple had also created the newton platform which was designed for PDA back in '87. In fact the term PDA was first coined and accepted for Apple's Newton even though the other devices of same category had been in market since '84.Because the Newton MessagePad has been the device which actually carried the features for which PDAs were designed & aimed for. Companies like DigitalOcean, Motorola & Sharp had also released the devices which ran the Newton OS.
