Dell always gives some or other discount. And you can buy $1 coupons on Ebay that will enable additional EPP discounts. You can get a decent 1 GB RAM + Core 2 Duo notebook with India warranty for USD 1200 if you use these tricks.
oh i do know about the Dell discount coupons but when i tried configuring the machine i was getting on ebay, the dell price was around 400 dollar more. but yeah, a lot of luck is involved. different models would result in different pricing with similar components. and if you find a combination which has a discount coupon valid for it at that very moment... you hit the jackpot.amazingly, the machine when configured on Dell India website comes much more expensive. they are charging close to Rs. 20,000 for upgrading from 1GB RAM to 4 GB RAM. another sad thing about ordering from Dell is that if you order a component which is not in their stock... the delivery gets delayed by 10-20 days. i needed it to be delivered within a week's time so ebay worked out for me. i might sell the notebook i am getting for a decent profit in india. have to get my hands on it first
@netfreak: what are the good locations in the far east to get cheap hardware? Say, Dubai compared to Singapore? I tried pricing thru online websites and there doesn't seem to be much of a discount. Only the US has a price advantage I believe....

HK and SG are the ones that I know of. Helped a colleague pick up a Thinkpad from HK. She got T43 (Core 2 Duo + 9 Cell battery)for something like INR 50k.
Best bet is to use someone from IT in local office, they will know all the dealers and will also know which ones are black market goods from mainland China.
