What if Apple itself decrypts the data and give it to fbi. then it wouldn't need to give the code to fbi. But then that would mean fbi simply comes to apple every time it needs data to be decrypted. fucking gray area really.

For many years, we have used encryption to protect our customers’ personal data because we believe it’s the only way to keep their information safe. We have even put that data out of our own reach, because we believe the contents of your iPhone are none of our business.
Apple can make the phone's OS insecure as the FBI is demanding. But we live in the world of leaks. If they do something like this in the background, it would leak someday and the company would lose face in the market. The protest they are doing is the smart thing to do to set a precedent. And if FBI somehow manages to convince the Justice Department or Senate or White House or whatever, they manage to shift all the blame to the government. By taking this public, it is the US government which has to defend their demand. It's not like Apple would shut down their US offices and move out for the sake of their customers.
