i agree with 133t. a combo of good h/w & s/w firewall is more than enuf. Apart from that what i have done is disable autorun and check pendrives before accessing them(use attrib from cmd). its more than enuf. Problems happen when u start searching for cracks on dodgy sites. ;)

the whole virus problem starts when users start hunting the illegal things !

^ That's what the comments section on torrent sites are for !!! Go through them and then decide to download. That way it is safer than direct http downloads.

most cracks and keygens are false positives, but you should know where you are getting them from. in fact Trojans, malware has developed much more now, it does not depended on software the problem is sites , with ads, java scripts running, for that there is a simple thing , download install sandboxie free version, install no script add on, on firefox [ the only reason i use firefox] and adblock, run the browser from sandbox, that way no cookie , js or anything is saved on system, no script will block almost any malicious site and scripts from running and sandbox will not save anything on system unless you let it through. i use 2 browsers one for sites i trust and would not mind cookies or scripts from them and another with no script which runs from sandbox for other sites , no AV installed now, i prefer to keep things out by using good h/w, s/w firewall and sandbox. and just for emergencies keep malwarebytes updated to run a scan once a month.

I use avast!I have tried quite a few Anti-virus and most of them fail with Virus which are already loaded in memory... They simple can't delete the virus/malware which is excuting... they'll give cant 'perform the operation' error (or something like that)... while the virus goes about with its business...Avast has a simple feature.. It loads itself at boot called Boot-time scanner and does a command line scan... This does take a hell lot of time but it does it comprehensively...Also has AutoSandbox feature where suspscious applications are executed...Also it is lite of the CPU and memory! !

installing MSE could be a huge mistake.

my experience with >> on a LEGIT copy of xp pro i installed after i got a nasty malware from a flash add i had my firewall down for 10 mins and this happened, anyway i installed MSE thinking it would take care of t, installed rebooted, windows just got stuck on log on screen , windows just refused to boot, so booted in safe mode, luckily i had malwarebytes installed updated and cleaned that malware , cleaned the registry entries it had made etc , it was totally gone, booted out of safe mode , windows still refused to boot, well i though maybe that something still remained from that stupid virus soi boooted off from Hiren's BootCD , run the virus scanner from there, all was clean, ran some disk tests everything all ok , by now i was getting bugged as that was the only p.c i had access to on that day , so booted into safe mode again , went into system logs to check what is happening and guess what MSE error : your windows license has expired login denied !!!!

and this happened on a legit copy of xp pro i had , anyway windows is so hackable all i had to do was to change the license to a PIRATED, one remove MSE make some changes to registry , and i was good . guess MS likes pirated copies better then legit ones. anyway i would never recommend this to anyone . there is very good chance that you get locked out your system even on legit copies , the risk is too much i knew how to get of that but 70% ppl could get stuck and would be forced to do a reinstall.

stick to nod32 and a good software firewall, infact a good hardware firewall combined with a good software firewall like outpost pro and you really don;t need av.

So that was the OS problem. you should have contacted microsoft about the problem if you had a legal copy of OS.you had a problem maybe coz your serial key was used by too many people so microsoft must have black listed it.
about the virus problem no antivirus is 100% efficient with viruse. also check the resources used when MSE scan is under progress as compared to other. MSE is always lighter.
also again different users is comfortable with different antivirus
some AV are much lighter some are efficient with threats. MSE is balance in beetween considering its free and full version i consider it good AV!!!!

I had found the simplest way. Use Genuine Windows and Microsoft Security Essential comes free with it. So No trojan, no adware and very lighter as compared to other Antivirus. Lappy Happy and Life Easy :)

ah well. i have used panda extensively from the day it was launched in beta.

it consumes a lot more memory in the background. made startup very slow.

a recent version had a changelog that they have improved its memory consumption etc etc.

might have changed in that update.
