VLC (which is my choice too) works well on my tablet's AMD Turion 1.9 ghz dual core CPU for 720p/1080p HD video, but falters on my old P4 2.4 ghz single-core non-HT desktop, so its only on my desktop Im trying others.
Kantaris can play almost anything you can throw at it -- AVI, MPEG, MGEG-AVC, WMV, MOV, MKV, quicktime, matroska, divx, xvid, H264, MP3, WMA, OGG files and more. Kantaris can also play DVDs and audio CDs. The player also displays some of the most beautiful music visualizations ever seen.
media player classic + k-lite codec pack for me.earlier i use to use vlc but it cant handle hd videos and i used to hate installing codecs. but now mpc with codecs works best for me.for music i just simply use windows media player, again i dont like installing unnecessary things.
I'm a massive fan of mplayer but the lack of development is sad considering it's massive potential. It's been 2 years and we are still stuck on mplayer 1.0 RC2. I guess this is one of the greatest drawbacks of open source and why it won't take off in a big way. There are simply too many builds available for most of the people to decide on.
