BSNL Broadband's new revolutionary (lol) broadband plans with minimum 2mbps speeds (lol)

It is still 512kbps after FUP and thus minimum speed will be 512kbps as per BSNL official plan. Another example of false news, this time regarding minimum speed. Nothing new. Though BSNL 512kbps unlimited users who like to watch youtube or like to watch streaming content can enjoy a day or half day 2mbps speed and rest of the month 512 kbps.

someone like me probably consume more than 1GB on this forum on a daily basis.

2mbps was a big deal back then. just like 16mbps is a big deal today. i am surprising airtel is not highlighting their recent move as groundbreaking. they really are letting you get 16mbps on all plans if it is feasible in your area.

Speed doesn't mean much these days as you very well know. Also most Cable ISPs easily provide 50 Mbps (their QoS is a different thing).

Also on 16 Mbps plans, Airtel gives 14 Mbps and that too is not stable. Whereas on 2/4/8 Mbps plans. Airtel gives well above subscribed speeds.

you might not agree with this, but this is a massive change in mentality for airtel that it is stupid to charge for speeds when they should have been charging for bandwidth all along. they have simplified their plans. consumers can now pick packages based on data alone. this is significantly better than most other isps in the country today. as for getting 14mbps on 16mbps plans, trai requires them to just give 80% of advertised speeds and that too till their own servers (for obvious reasons). anything over 12.8mbps is within permissible limits.

overall, this is a major step forward.

I think most ISPs specially BSNL & MTNL are actually abusing 80% Bandwidth rule. They provide 80% of advertised speed, no more than that. I am sure if TRAI had set 70% guideline. They would've been providing only 70% of advertised speeds. Airtel broke away with this stupid norm. They provide at least 100% of advertised speeds. In most cases, they give well above advertised speeds. In my area, Airtel gives 20% above advertised speeds.

However, there are some problems with 16 Mbps plans. Airtel having recently upgraded to 16 Mbps plan do not provide full speeds. Hopefully they will also solve this in future and give full speeds as they do on rest of their plans.

However, on the topic. I think BSNL has gotten really desperate. 2 Crore customers lost within 1 year. 20 Lakh Landline/Broadband customers lost within 1 year. 7800 Crore Rupee of Losses in just 1 year. BSNL is in pretty bad shape.

This move of BSNL to increase pre FUP minimum speed is a silly move. It actually shows BSNL has run out of moves to recapture Broadband market. BSNL can't innovate their Tariff plans. They cannot provide good QoS. They can't provide good CC and technical support.

I think BSNL is game over. If RJio comes up with good plans. BSNL will go into much deeper losses. Don't know about future of BSNL when that happens.

the problem is not airtel. the problem is dsl technology which hits its limits when you reach 16mbps speeds. quality of wiring and hardware becomes more of a thing here. it's not like airtel is intentionally limiting speeds on 16mbps plans. they really have no reasons to do so considering user is still paying per GB of data. and it does not matter if the data is downloaded at 14mbps or 16mbps.

@x720 might be able to state the practical top speeds one can expect on dsl tech airtel uses.

Of course i am not criticizing Airtel for intentionally providing low speed. I understand your point about DSL limitation. But traditional copper wires on VDSL can give higher speeds. Also technology exists beyond VDSL which can give even higher speed on copper.

I think Airtel will soon expand in that direction as will in future.
