This is more or less how my data-plans work. Comes with a default 3GB and you just buy what you need if you want to use more :)

well of course, his consumption was unreasonable. but the limit was applied not on him but their entire customer base. that has been the problem with FUP. just a few users might be misusing their connections. but the restrictions imposed are unreasonable and on everyone. 25GB of course is pretty disgusting. comparable to what we have here in india. but in the end, 5 canadian dollars for 40GB is pretty darn reasonable when we considering their purchasing power of canadians compared to india. this is something we do not have here in india. i just love their 4999 plan... you pay 4999 plus taxes to get 100GB at 16mbps. that is like 55 rupees per GB. and after consuming 100GB you pay 400 rupees per GB plus taxes! yey.

200GB to 25GB: Canada gets first, bitter dose of metered Internet

But like it or not, the Canadian Radio-Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved UBB for the incumbent carrier Bell Canada in September. Competitive ISPs, which connect to Canada's top telco for last-mile copper connections to customers, will also be metered by Bell. Even though the CRTC gave these ISPs a 15 percent discount this month (TekSavvy asked for 50 percent), it's still going to mean a real adjustment for consumers.

In simple terms, it looks like a private company got the government to legalize FUP.

I can see it happening here in India too.

this is just the beginning
Huge ISPs want per-GB payments from Netflix, YouTube

Poor Internet providers. They have to carry all that horrible, horrible traffic from Netflix and YouTube, and they just can't afford it anymore. Unless they start charging end users 21 percent more for Internet access, or unless they're allowed to bill Internet companies at 3.7¢ per GB, the Internet could "become unusable at peak times" due to congestion.

THe ips, cable companies cannot believe that there is a thing known as free enterprise.they cannot imagine that cable tv system is comming to an end.We wont even have netflix, hulu type of distribution and already airtel has started to throttle the internet.

Time for ISPs to move away from using Bell Canada's DSL network and build something else. If the ISP is running on Wireless or FTTx or had their own copper, they would not be subject to this charge.

This is one of the dangers of LLU but if LLU happened in India, there are already so many other options (wireless, ftth, independent dsl networks, cablewalas) that it would be stupid for whoever owns the copper to implement such charges unless they did it from day 1.

Rightfully so. Netflix and Youtube etc are no longer peering partners because their traffic is no longer at 1:1 - more like 5:1, and thats why they should have to pay (though a flat-rate option would be fine as well).

There is a thing known as free enterprise - that's what is creating these issues. Prices have been so low for so long considering the expenditure, however fortunately for those companies, the Cable TV and DSL systems have a long way to go before they fade away in to obselescense.

Remember, Airtel throttles the internet for it's retail customers only. I buy bandwidth off of Bharti, but they have no right to throttle me and my customers, since I'm distributing that data on my own network. But if Netflix and Youtube wanted priority access on my network, I do, in theory, have the right to charge them for that privilege, otherwise if their traffic isn't high enough priority, then the user experience could be degraded.

Now keep in mind that even if I have a Youtube or Netflix cache in my network, the videos still have to be able to get from Netflix/Youtube's main servers to my network, somehow. And if Netflix and Youtube aren't going to pony up any cash for bandwidth, who is? Am I expected to pay? What benefit is my company going to get out of it? Is Netflix or Youtube going to share some revenue with me? Not likely.

You are a vampiric isp.First you have already stated that you will do away with flat plans, which what canada isps have done and now you have the audacity to say that you will charge youtube.I hope your hayani pops up like a dream ballon. You will do serious damage.Already aritel started the fup and now you want to start tiered internet.your true colors are now showing.
