Changed Cable Operator: What to do with old STB

Hello guys. I am from Kolkata(Kidderpore area)I had bought 2 set top boxes from my local cable operator(National Cable) which was from Galaxzee. Now with their poor service, i opted to change my cable operator(Hamara Armaan) . When i asked the new operator to use 2 old STBs that i have purchased previously, they told me that I have to buy a new STB from them. They informed me that those old stbs are operator-tied and no new connection from a different operator can be activated in them.So basically they tell to junk those stbs, which i have purchased. I cant even exchange them or transfer to other relatives. Is it true.? Do i have any option to use those STBs with a new operator? Are they taking me for a ride?:madnesslz help as the new operator wants me to book a new STB. I want to learn about my options.

well not really. it depends upon the operator... i am not sure if zee dish tv would give me a connection if i buy the STB or the Dish from someone else. i should be able to use the same hardware if i am going to use the service from the same company.but you really cannot force them to allow you to use the equipment purchased from a third party.

Sobasically thisholds true: Change cable operator = Buy a New STB from them. So where is the customer benefits they gloat about in ads?
