Google is doing it cleverly. They are using the same action but not the same animation.
Not sure how this works on devices with smaller displays.

got the update of gmail, it looks super cool with small images making it easy to recognize the sender.
can't upload the pic on IMGUR, don't know why getting "230 security error " .....

In case you are missing the delete key in the action bar, you can bring it back from the settings.
