Gmail Updates

That option has never existed. You have to turn it on per email address. I think.

Considering the fact that Google has always promoted the Archive feature over Delete feature, the article linked above is a stupid rant.
I wanted the delete button. I enabled it from settings. I did not like the profile pictures, I disabled them from settings. Do I know more about how people use Gmail than Google? No. Do I mind spending 2 minutes to customize the app to work as per my needs? No.

agreed outlook is the most dumbed own interface of all the leading mail providers.
It seems they have put outlook on modern UI ver 2.0

It can be seen from the poll on the given article. From more than 3300 votes, 88% people wants the delete button. On what basis Google is promoting archive function is hard to understand. And not everybody likes to customize the app. There would be a lot of people using gmail who has never went to settings & customized the app.
What I want is the buttons on the bottom of the app, not at the top. I don't like to go all the way to top to delete an email.

Here is the thing. Google knows something that none of us knows. They know how many people use the archive feature as compared to people who use the delete button. Because they operate the service. So they probably have enough user data on which feature is more popular amongst the entire user base. If they made a conscious decision of showing the archive button as default, there must have been a good reason behind that.
Polls on CNet are visited by technical folks who are more like power users who know how to manage their mails properly. Google on the other hand probably made a decision based on the more popular way of managing mail by the entire userbase of Gmail. Yes, they could have made things easier by running a small wizard at the first boot asking the user what they prefer delete/archive/both. The few non-techie people I know do not even archive mails. They just keep everything right in their inbox because they are visible there which provides a fake feeling of safety. Archive the mails and it would just cause a panic. My dad does not know how to operate Gmail properly. He sometimes accidentally deletes emails in his Inbox and then calls me to get them back to his Inbox. :
And yes, I would have prefered the action bar at the bottom of the app as well. Google+ has the same damn problem. One of the reasons why I prefer Falcon Pro as my Twitter app is that it lets me shift the action bar to the bottom. Default setting is action bar at top.

Is it just me or marking a few emails as read via the new app doesn't mark them as read everywhere else i.e. Mobile Website and PC Website...

as long as it is syncing properly (that means you are giving it enough time) it should not happen.
