@amish you cannot hide your profile on Plus like you can or could on facebook.
people can search you by your name. you cannot have a pseudonym (use a real looking name to avoid getting a suspension).
your friends already on plus would see you in their circle recommendation lists. (this is largely based on address book connections).
and the connections are not mutual. if someone add you, you do not have to add them back. if you do not like them, you can block/ignore them.
