I have used BSNL modem for 7 years (I have kept it on rent but used my own). The modem rent has gone up from Rs 25 to 70 from this month (increased across all types of modem; mine is basic RJ45 modem)
How does one surrender the modem? The exchange is quite far and I have to take a half day leave (since no one comes in before 11 AM at earliest)
What is the procedure to give up a modem?
(not surrender the broadband connection - just not take the modem on rent from them and save Rs 70 + 12.36 % tax)

Knowing BSNL don't think they'll arrange a pickup of the modem. Moreover they'll ask to give a written application and handover the modem in person by visiting the exchange itself.

you will have to fill up a form with your latest bill copy and give the modem to the exchange by yourself.

I went with a written application. First they could not understand what is returning the modem. They wanted to know if I am giving up my line and broadband!! At last made them understand that I am giving up modem on rent not the line / broadband (though the letter said it all in detail).
They issued a work order to take it back (work order had no option for return of modem only for change of modem) and then another guy in External took it back and gave me a printed sheet saying my modem status has been modified (whatever that means)
Filing Income Tax form is a breeze compared to this. In between they took up a whole day from 10:30 AM - 2 PM. No office for me that day.
Do not know if they will give back the Rs 500 security deposit or even stop charging the Rs 70. Visiting BSNL is so depressing. Do I need to visit another building which is accounts department? If so to whom should I give a letter. No one knew. In hindsight will have been better to give them the Rs 70 + 12.36 % tax each month.

i had got my deposit in 3 months time. they should stop charging the rental from next billing cycle. If they dont then you have to visit again. good luck!

It is nice to know how things work in our country, at least occasionally. The comfort of our office is not India.
PS : Neutral tone.

Did you visit exchange and surrender modem or did you surrender and also visit any accounts officer and show him any proof that you gave up the modem?
I surrendered modem at the exchange. They gave me something called Telephone Advice Note. Then I went to AOTR of my area / exchange number (in Calcutta the BSNL exchanges and commercial offices related to the exchanges are not housed in same building; such as an exchange may handle numbers from 2413 - 2425 and another building in another area handle commercial matters related to inflated bill, adjustments etc of 2413 - 2425) and gave to a clerk a letter to the AOTR and the original Telephone Advice Note.
Bill of June that I will receive in July should not have the Rs 70 + 12.36 % tax (I doubt if I will receive the Rs 500 deposit. Not worried about it)
Now it is all up to God.

Did the same thing which u did. After 2 3 months follow up with them for deposit. They will issue a cheque in your name.
