How to maintain privacy online?

BSNL gives me dynamic IP. Just log out and log in changes it from
117.194.xxx.xxx to 117.248.xxx.xxx

Does this help to hide me?

If I had bad, bad argument with someone on this Forum and they decided to sue me will they have really hard time tracking me down? They have to go to court, get order to view logs of this Forum and then get order to access BSNL logs. That would take few months. And very probably due to huge volume of BSNL customers it will take lot of time to locate the logs (unless they have been deleted) and after all of that I can claim I was not the user then but someone else was and on and on and on ..

That would be real hard to do with static ip that private players offer. Not only hard but impossible.

So for torrent, arguments under a pseudonym etc BSNL is better is it not ?

(As long as I use a email id looped to another looped to my real one so everyone has to run from yahoo to gmail to find what is my real email id; and I am never ever dumb enough to check any type of mail on Android based phone so gmail comes to know who I am; make a fresh Play store dummy account looped 3 times through 2 email companies)

Actually no one provides you with a static IP unless you specifically ask and pay for it. It is just not good business. IPs are in shortage.

If you really want privacy, get a VPN account on a service that does not keep logs.

I am a privacy freak and I get into heated arguments in forums though I have never been warned by a mod.

What if a company I wrote a review of gets annoyed being my main concern. What if a restaurant wants to sue me being a likely case - if I have not used any bad words or "gaali" in review.

They would get a court order to get me to give me your IP. I would give your IP. They would go to the ISP to find your identity. Unless you are using a VPN, it would be fairly easy to identify you.

But there is this .. an ip checker says I have downloaded torrents. I used it once. My god I have never seen those torrents (because it is dynamic IP someone else's - at least a dozen different people downloads from 2011 - 13 was shown to me)

ISP would use the time and the IP to detect which customer posted that content online (or downloaded that file from the internet) at that particular time. If you think that BSNL would take months to find out this information, you are forgetting something, the logs are stored on computers not printouts.

You might claim that someone was using your wireless network without your permission. But then the government sort of has already made it illegal to have your wireless network open to strangers.

Hmm food for thought. But I can always deny and show court what is dynamic ip and how fast it changes. I am worried about a meditation course in India I wrote about. Nothing bad. But I expressed doubts in a meditation forum in USA. No bad language used.

So they have to go from India to USA back to India to BSNL then find me.

good luck telling cops that it was not you who did what you did. always works. i hope you have connections with high commands of either congress or bjp. my suggestion would be to pay for a good VPN if you value your privacy. do not leave your fate in the hands of bsnl babus. Google and read the story of the dude named Lakshmana Kailash.

All of this is such a grey area. There are review sites but no one knows if frank reviews can lead to law suits. Anyways what is to be done.

If someone files a law suit, cops will not be involved but court summons

But what if reverse happens. If someone using this ip address at 6 PM today said something nasty and BSNL made a mistake and gave my name !!
