so if i get a gprs enabled mobile phone. what speeds am i expected to get in a decent coverage area?

It will fluctuate between 100 to 200 kbps.

ooh so it would be above 10KBps? i think thats pretty good... how much does airtel charge for unlimited data transfer on PC through GPRS mobile?

It depends on state and operator as Airtel on which Netfreak is getting around 150-200kbps sucks in Delhi even with edge ............

Yaa it depends on Operator / Network.

I was on roaming last month. Coverage was good in Delhi -> Gurgaon - > Jaipur Highway. Stayed in Pilani (Rajasthan) for couple of days, there none of operators gave usable speeds.

Airtel charges 900 something for unlimited. MTNL/BSNL charge 400 - 500 for the same.

am i missing something , gprs cannot theoritically provide speeds above 48 kbps

You are right about gprs, it gives poor speed. But if grs network support EDGE then speed can go up to 300 kbps.

Most of GSM networks support EDGE.

yep the speed sucks.. was using it abt 2 yrs back in delhi.. guess nothing changes..price varies... i have airtel corporate.. & i can use GPRS at 99@unlimited but haven't subscribed.i see 2 probs in GPRS/EDGE based on my exp...1. Ur phone line (mobile) is busy or out of coverage sometimes when someone calls u..2. Ur phone battery takes a heavy toll as it drains quickly & u have to keep charger on.. 3. The speed is a bit better than dialup(56kbps) i would get 8-9Kbps max. even though my phone was EDGE enabled.. the speed capping is done at airtel end.4. U have to keep the phone connected via cable or nearby if using bluetooth.. haven't tested bluetooth conn. but i guess that it would be slow than cable. It's always better to use Wi-Fi Network for internet if using at home..

Yes capping is done at Airtel / Hutch end. I get 150 - 200 if I use my corporate SIM and much less I use my prepaid personal SIM in the same network and place. But our corporate plan is 900 something per month.

OMG !! 900 pm for UL that to on corp plan.. Guess it's better in other places..i feel much blessed then having 99 pm for UL.. but overall untill 3G or Wi-MAX happens in india wired net is best.It seems nothing beats VSNL's 2Mbps 9to9 NU that i have.. it's almost like having UL except for 12 hrs (mostly spend in off) at 606 pm including tax :)Downloaded Knoppix DVD yesterday @ approx 700MB/hr.. ;)

They have cheaper plans as well (for corporate).. Other companies have it for 199 in Bombay. But those plans do not have any SLA :( In this plan you need no go to their call center for things. Your call is handled directly by someone in switching if its related to tech.
