Pranab Mukherjee may be new FM - sources
The Congress party may name Pranab Mukherjee as the country's new finance minister, two Congress leaders on condition of anonymity said on Tuesday.
"He may continue in finance," a party source said, declining to be named. Mukherjee was foreign minister in the last government until the general election. He was also temporarily in charge of the finance ministry.
Senior Congress party leader Oscar Fernandes said no official decision had yet been made.
"Nothing has been decided so far. This is the prerogative of the prime minister. A decision will be taken after discussing with Sonia Gandhi," Fernandes told Reuters.
Earlier, the party unanimously elected Manmohan Singh as leader of the Congress Parliamentary party, setting the stage for his reappointment as prime minister.
Asked if the party had finalised Mukherjee, the former foreign minister, as candidate, former Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said, "more or less".
Later Nath told Reuters that Mukherjee was best placed to answer the question.
"Pranab Mukherjee is the current finance minister," he said, referring to Mukherjee's previous temporary role in the outgoing government.
"You ask him," he said.
