@amish, I just called 1503 and asked about this, they said its not necessary to activate 3G. And I just noticed, I can browse at TERRIBLY slow speed. I wonder why 3G is this slow!

so how did it work now?? did u have to activate GPRS?btw 3G is not available in all areas.. but as per MTNL by November end, all of mumbai will be covered by 3G.

Its too flaky, I would not say it 'worked'. Google and rediff opened AWFULLY slow, even slowed than GPRS speed. I'm in area covered by 3G, I'm indoors though. Either way I think they're really bad at it right now, not '3G' yet. I paid more than 700 and I have yet to taste '3G'.People of India, 3G is still *not* here! Ugh! :(

hi nimbuz
my name is suraj and i am from mumbai. i am also currently using 3g on mtnl dolphin sim card. the handset i am using is the Nokia e71 and i am getting great speeds of upto 0.5 Mbps. i am also looking to buy an iPhone 3gs so that i can enjoy the speeds offered on a better phone.
Your post however has got me a bit worried. let me point out a few things to you which may help you and also help me figure out if mtnl 3g will work with the iphone 3gs.

1)when i put the sim into the nokia e71 3 g started on its own. i didnt have to make any settings, maybe it came preinstalled in the new sim.
2) whenever i am in a 3 g coverage area there is a distinct 3g or 3.5g sign on the top lefthandside of my handset.
3) i once called up the mtnl helpline number and settings they gave me ( though not required ) for the e71, which i think shud be same for the iphone 3gs are as follows:
accesspoint name (APN ) : gprsmtnlmum ( i think this is where your poblem lies it is not gprsppsmtnlmum )
username: mtnl
prompt password : no
password : mtnl234
authentication : normal

also which area are you from ??? in mumbai there are hardly any areas which have 3g. Do you see the 3g sign on your phone ??

if u want to discuss this topic in detail here is my email

please do let me know thanks

I have got a new Trump pre-paid connection with Jadoo 3G.

So trying to understand this -
1. Do i need to get GPRS activated by calling 1503.
2. Then I need to enter the GPRS settings as provided.
3. Anything else I need to do?

----------

Also any idea whether this will work with Google Dev Phone

Thanx

Quick Update for all: I did manage to setup 3G/EDGE on my iPhone, but since I only tried from home (indoors) and only once, I wasn't able to use the 3G connection speed at all. Since I couldn't risk my iPhone further for a flaky 3G connection, I returned to Airtel. To reiterate, Internet did work on my iPhone at GPRS speed because 3G is not really available yet. Its nothing to do with the iPhone, you need to be outdoors, and with the hotspot for it to work. :S

I have the same problem. With present settings(APN-pps3g,User name-mtnl,Password-mtnl123) there is NO way UNLOCKED iPhone 3G IS GOING TO WORK ON MTNL3G.The problem is with MTNL network settings. They are working on it and the solution will take about 2-3 weeks.(I spoke to somebody in technical department)Till that keep using your present 2g network and do not waste time calling customer care
